16 CRAFTBUTCHER l MAY 2018

PRESIDENT’S BLOG Last month, Filmor D &

E organised a roadshow and product evaluation event with Dalziel and partners at Kinnmel Manor, Abergele. I was delighted to accept an invitation to judge the evaluation event which was well organised and well supported, by butchers from Wales and Cheshire. It was good to see an event such as this in Wales and thank you to Filmor for making it possible. Also, our congratulations to Federation members K E Taylor,

On the subject of

evaluation events, I would like to thank those members who supported the Federation’s National Meat Products Competition, also held last month at Foodex. I was disappointed that I was unable to attend but grateful to Past President Jim Sperring who did the honours on the

day in presenting trophies, along with sponsors, to the winners. (see the full write up of the event on pages 6, 7 & 8).

Also in April, I attended

the North West Q Guild BBQ at the new Innovative food ingredients headquarters in Fleetwood. Another good event with butchers demonstrating award winning products plus the chance to look at the wood pellet BBQs and view the very nice showroom and test kitchen.

Early May saw me attend

the Sustainable Food Trust conference where I took part in a panel discussion on the future of small abattoirs which was one of the major themes of the two day event.

It was encouraging to

hear delegates say that they recognised the vital contribution local abattoirs make to animal welfare and the growing public demand for local traceable meat. Te previous day Michael Gove, Environment Secretary, told the conference that he was discussing how animals could be killed closer to where they were raised but gave no commitments.

Subsequently, the

Federation and the Sustainable Food Trust have both responded to DEFRA’s “Health and Harmony” consultation on the post-Brexit future policy on food and farming. Te government paper raised many proposals that gave hope for the future of small abattoirs.
