FEDERATION MEMBERS ENJOY SUCCESS AT UK SAUSAGE WEEK
ELEVEN members of the National Federation of Meat and Food Traders (NFMFT) were announced winners at a celebratory lunch and finals for UK Sausage Week which took place at Plaisterers Hall, London in October. Leading the onslaught for
the title of UK Sausage Week Champion was Derbyshire butcher and NFMFT National President John Mettrick of J W Mettrick & Sons winning the North West Traditional title with a ‘Sprout and Stilton Pork Sausage’. Cumbria’s Dales Traditional
continued from page 3 NFMFT will now play a
full part in negotiations with Defra and FSA officials to ensure that the legislation and guidance is applied as fairly as possible. Te devil may well be in the detail.
We are particularly concerned at the prospect of FSA vets
pouring over months of recordings looking for potential non- compliances in order to initiate retrospective prosecutions. We are very keen to hear from members on any concerns they may have. In his announcement Michael Gove said: “We have some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world and want to cement our status as a global leader by
continuing to raise the bar. Te reaction to this consultation highlights the strength
of feeling among the public that all animals should be treated with the utmost respect at all stages of life and be subject to the highest possible welfare standards. Tese strong measures also provide a further demonstration
to consumers around the world that as we leave the EU we continue to produce our food to the very highest standards. Having carefully considered all of the responses, the
Government agrees with the overwhelming proportion of respondents that were in favour of mandatory CCTV to protect animal welfare in slaughterhouses. Te proposals will also give the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) Official Veterinarians (OVs) unfettered access to the last 90 days of footage to help them monitor and enforce animal welfare standards.” n
