A Message from the Chief Executive

John Murray Chief Executive

The Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) is the voice of the UK maritime engineering and business sector and a leading member of Maritime UK which encompasses a diverse industry that covers all aspects of the maritime sector. The UK remains a substantial trading nation and a large proportion of the maritime industry’s sales turnover comes from our business overseas

through exporting our world‐class capabilities in engineering and technology.

This Review provides a snapshot of the wide range of engineering and technological solutions on offer from our members, suitably encapsulating this ‘Year of Engineering’. As a demonstration of the sector’s diversity, it is also appropriate to highlight the many underlying products and services which support the multiplicity of applications required by this global industry and why the UK is a leading maritime player.

Who are our members?

SMI members cover the whole of the maritime engineering and business sector and include companies which design, build, refit and modernise ships, and supply equipment and services for all types of commercial and naval ships, ports and terminals infrastructure, offshore oil and gas, maritime security and safety,

SMI has held several successful conferences surrounding the type 31e frigate programme
