President’s Foreword It gives me great pleasure to introduce the 2018 edition of the Society’s Annual Review.
This year is the “Year of Engineering” and we have taken this as the theme for this edition. As the leading trade association for companies engaged in maritime engineering, we have sought to highlight some of the key advanced technologies offered by members of the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI).
We are grateful to all our contributors including the Royal Academy of Engineering which has high‐ lighted the importance of encouraging diversity into the engineering profession to meet the societal and environmental challenges we face.

Ensuring the sector continues to innovate and can develop the technologies which will be required by our customers in the future has been the driver in SMI supporting the development of a Maritime Research and Innovation Centre (MaRI‐UK) with a working group of member companies and the UK’s leading universities in maritime engineering. We are hopeful that the government will agree with our assessment of the need for a central focus on collaborative research in maritime and 2019 will see our ambition fulfilled.
Last year saw the publication of the Ministry of Defence’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSbS). As the only trade association to be cited in the strategy, SMI’s role is to support the industry led Maritime Enterprise Working Group (MEWG) whose primary role is to assist in the delivery of the strategy, providing a government Industry forum through which issues of common concern can be addressed. Importantly, the MEWG sees its remit going beyond the grey ships of the Ministry of Defence and looks to take advantage of the current boom in offshore wind farms and the need for a variety of vessels to support their operation and maintenance, as but one example of the broader opportunities available to the UK shipyards and its supply chain.
SMI has been active in seeking a sensible and pragmatic approach from UK government in its procurement of its non‐warship vessels, which ensures a level playing field against international competitors and recognition of the socio‐economic benefits to the prosperity agenda of procuring assets in the UK. It is our belief that supporting sovereign capability in this way will lead to greater export opportunities and mirror the success of the UK’s major competitors.
One of SMI’s major roles is to support the industry’s marketing and sales to both the domestic and international customer. We run an extensive programme of events and manage the pavilions for all the major maritime trade fairs, and we regularly receive overseas delegations eager to do business with the UK. Therefore, if you are an international reader you are welcome to contact us for more information on how UK companies can assist with your requirements. Equally if you are a UK based company which is seeking new business opportunities I invite you to read the Chief Executive’s message and contact him to find out how your company can benefit from being a member of the Society of Maritime Industries.
I hope you enjoy the Review.
