A coordinated drive to address engineering skills and diversity
This is Engineering is a multi‐year digital campaign to encourage teenagers to consider a future in engineering
Inclusion Leadership Group, a network of more than 60 engineering employers and employer‐led professional organisations. We focus on sharing best practice and developing practical tools to support employers who are committed to increasing diversity and inclusion in their organisations.
We also cannot address the skills challenge without addressing the narrow and outdated perception of engineering and giving more young people from all backgrounds the opportunity to understand and explore what engineering really looks like. A Google search for ‘engineer’ returns a disproportionate number of images of white men in hard hats, masking the huge variety of engineering careers and impacts, and giving very few young people diverse engineering role models that they can relate to.
The government’s Year of Engineering initiative is designed to help address this. We’re really pleased that government has recognised the significance of the skills challenge and taken action to bring the profession together to raise the profile of engineering.
We are working closely with the Year of Engineering team to make the most of the opportunity it provides, and in January we launched our landmark digital campaign This is Engineering to encourage teenagers to think about careers in engineering by demonstrating how relevant it is to what they do and love day to day. Developed with the support of EngineeringUK and industry partners, This is Engineering takes a marketing‐led approach – using the expertise of those who market brands and concepts to young people day in day out via social media – and is informed by research with teenagers into what their current perceptions are and how they make decisions about their futures.

Of course, a year is not enough to address the skills challenge, so ensuring that the profile of engineering continues to grow beyond December and that the Year has a lasting legacy is a priority. This is Engineering will be a multi‐year campaign and we look forward to working with the profession, through This is Engineering and our work on diversity and inclusion, in an ongoing effort to attract, develop and retain more engineers from all backgrounds to our important and exciting profession.

Since launch, the This is Engineering films have been viewed over 16 million times, by a gender balanced audience, and initial research indicates that among those who have seen the films, consideration of engineering as a career has increased by 41%, and by 75% among girls.
