WELSH HEADTEACHER HONOURED IN UK

CELEBRATION OF TEACHING

Rhian Morgan Ellis has been named as one of the nation’s most inspirational teachers at the Pearson National Teaching Awards on Sunday 20 October. Rhian was presented with a Gold Award in the Headteacher of the Year in a Secondary School category. Rhian has spent the last 30 years at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda, taking the headship role on in 2010 and transforming the then-struggling school. Rhian has ensured that the school is rooted in the community and maintains a strong sense of Welsh identity for their pupils. Rhian’s impact can also be seen by the pupils she has inspired to move into teaching. Her nomination was supported by a local headteacher who claimed that she was only a headteacher today because of Rhian. In total there are 24 former pupils now working at the school. Te Pearson National Teaching Awards is an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they teach – many of whom, as we now know, go on to train as teachers themselves thanks to the significant impact their teachers have had on them.
