A job for life is a thing of the past, a new survey had revealed, with people now moving job roles more frequently than ever before. In Wales, 69 per cent of those surveyed agreed that a job for life was something they no longer expected, with only 17 per cent in the region having stayed working in a role for more than 10 years.

Gardening is well known to be good for body and soul – it keeps you physically active and just being outdoors is a natural mood booster that also provides your body with vital doses of sunlight and vitamin D.

Creating your own health and wellbeing garden can be as easy as making a natural snug that can be a place in your existing outdoor space for meditation and mindfulness. Dotting focal points around the garden can also help contemplation – clumps of lavender, grasses swaying in the breeze or zen like trees such as Japanese maples.

By making a few simple changes you can easily transform any garden into a relaxing space. Step one is to make sure that you have a quiet corner away from all of the hustle and bustle of everyday life where you can sit and simply enjoy the garden. Try to avoid having straight paths and walls where possible as these can bring a feeling of regimentation to your space, instead use meandering paths, curved paving and foliage instead of fences which gives a more natural feel.

Make sure you have a variety of fragrant plants. Lavender is ideal as it attracts butterflies and bees – a joy to watch and good for pollinating your garden. Herbs such as mint, rosemary, thyme and sage are also a good choice. Even the smallest of outside space – a front garden or balcony - can accommodate a pot of herbs, which always smell strongest at dusk. Research has shown that brightly coloured flowers are brilliant for lifting the mood so plant some vibrant reds, yellows and oranges as well as cooler whites and blues that are good for relaxation. Finally, think about a water feature. If the constant trickle of a fountain doesn’t work for you then something calmer such as a pond, or small container pond, is a great place to relax and reflect. Whilst planning your peaceful retreat, don’t forget the rest of the garden this month. As the RHS says, January might be the middle of winter but as the days lengthen the garden starts to grow. Now is a great time to plan for the coming gardening year and to order seeds and plants. Enjoy the fresh air, on dry sunny days, and check your winter protection, stakes, ties and supports are still working after any severe weather. Also put out food for birds and leave some garden areas uncut, a little longer, to provide shelter for wildlife in your garden. Jobs for this month should include: • Cleaning pots and greenhouses ready for spring • Dispersing worm casts in lawns • Planning your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season

• Putting out food and water for birds • Digging over plots and beds that have not been dug already

The research revealed that 53 per cent of those questioned in Wales had also completely changed careers at some point in their life, with the top three reasons for changing being to either find a better work life balance, search for a new challenge or get a better salary. Older adults approaching retirement have only had a total of seven jobs throughout their entire working life. In Wales, 69 per cent of people reported to have had six jobs or less in their working lifetimes.
