Over 4,200 children live with foster families across Wales at any one time. These families offer children support, stability and love for as long as they need it – from a few days to an entire childhood.

A need for more carers There is always a need for more foster carers in Wales – hundreds each year. Without more foster families coming forward, some children will find themselves living a long way from family, school and friends or being split up from brothers and sisters. More foster carers means that children who need a foster family have the greatest chance of living with carers who have the skills to meet a particular child’s specific needs. Just as there is diversity in fostered children, foster carers need to come from a variety of backgrounds and have different life experiences, skills and qualities to help meet the needs of each individual child and young person in foster care.

There is a particular need in Wales for people to come forward with the right skills and experience to care for teenagers and sibling groups. Colin Turner, director of The Fostering Network in Wales said: ‘Looking after fostered children can be challenging. But it is that challenge, along with the reward of seeing these children and young people flourish, that many of the amazing foster carers across Wales say makes them proud to foster.’ Jeannie, a foster carer from Mid Wales, said: ‘If you have a lot of patience, compassion and a sense of humour then I urge you find out more about fostering - it’s the best thing we ever did!’ To find out more about becoming a foster carer visit thefosteringnetwork. org.uk/couldyoufoster, or to make a donation to The Fostering Network as they help transform fostered children’s lives visit thefosteringnetwork.org.uk/ donate
