The latest facts, fads and tips to help keep you in ship shape condition this season

SPA OF THE SEASON CLIFF HOUSE HOTEL,

ARDMORE, IRELAND There’s no more atmospheric place to soak up the charms of the Emerald Isle than the Cliff House Hotel. Misty mornings make bathing alfresco (in roll- top tubs filled with skin-rejuvenating seaweed) strangely comforting; the whispering waves during top-to-toe grainy scrubs and muscle melting hot stone massages put busy minds to rest. For the intrepid, there’s also direct access to the sea for wild swimming. With a Michelin starred house restaurant, what are you waiting for? www.cliffhousehotel.ie

BEAUTY MYTH DRINKING LOTS OF WATER HYDRATES THE SKIN

False: The moisture level in your skin is affected by environment (low humidity or harsh winds) and age (oil production slows over time), but not by how many bottles of Evian you can drink. You can only hydrate the skin from the outside with moisturisers. Skin isn’t like a plant that wilts and then perks up with a drop of water.

IT’S A THING: BOTOX FOR THE CALVES It’s all to do with achieving a more streamlined calf muscle. The treatment is being used to slim down the gastronemeous muscle at the back of the leg. Botox relaxes this muscle and in turn shrinks it as it is no longer being used as much. Practitioners injecting the calf muscles have to be sure to inject enough to slim the muscle, but not so much that the muscle is completely paralysed and the patient unable to use the muscle to walk. Sound like a good idea? Maybe not!

WHAT IS IT? A TURKISH GET-UP

By the time you’ve done about 20, you’ll hate kettlebells, Turkey and the entire concept of exercise.

What is it? A highly effective, highly functional exercise that uses your entire body, even if it does sound a bit like the title of a terrible straight-to-DVD thriller.

How much does it cost? It uses a kettlebell, so you’ll need access to one of those.

What does it promise? Improved shoulder stability, core strength, mobility and leg drive. Plus it has an actual point: do enough of these and you’ll be stronger, as opposed to just looking stronger.

What’s it actually like? You lie flat on your back, holding a kettlebell above your head. Then, keeping that arm perfectly outstretched, you stand up. Then, once you’re there, you return to the starting position and do it again. On the minuscule off-chance that you master this, try it with a kettlebell in each hand. It’s even worse.

Best and worst bits This is a hard exercise that will leave you wobbly-legged and out of breath. But it’s also brilliant, and much more effective than a bicep curl will ever be.

Is it worth it? If you do indeed manage to master it, it will deliver muscles and cardiovascular strength.
