PIONEERING AND PUBLISHING IN BRAZIL Report from Pastor Ábner Araújo, São Paolo
H
AVING moved the church to new premises about six months ago, much work has gone into adapting the building for ser- vices and other meetings. External bricking at the front has hidden commercial-looking metal doors and blocked loud incoming traffi c noise. The current kitchen will be changed into a classroom and an attached garage into a reception area where we can also display literature. Steps have been taken towards
registering the church with the local council, which we must do in order to have permission to use the new premises. In parallel with this we have started a series of studies on ‘The Church’, deal- ing with subjects necessary for the establishment of a formal member- ship. We are encouraged to see marks
of grace in those who have re- cently professed faith among us. One young mother experienced a trial of faith a few months ago
when her daughter was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo treatment. She testifi es to having experienced the near- ness of the Lord and has witnessed to many people in the hospital.
Our Christmas evangelistic service had a record attendance of 58, of whom 28 were visitors. Sunday services now average
about 25 and we see new visitors almost every Sunday, but few keep attending. For many in Brazil being reformed only means subscribing to a confession of faith and holding to the Five Points of Calvinism. Few want reverent wor- ship, Puritan sanctifi cation, a working church concept, loyalty to the body of Christ and to honour the Lord’s Day.
