have too many claims on their time, this should be treated with scepticism
if not downright suspicion, especially when their appointment diaries are always full to the point of bursting, with every line of every page filled in, as though proclaiming how noteworthy they obviously are when compared with ordinary mortals. Indeed, as soon as new diaries are issued,
there is an irresistible compulsion not to leave any spaces blank, with nothing in reserve. While there are some who can cope with
immense work-schedules while having the time and patience to listen and discuss essential matters with those of lower standing, this is not a widespread talent in many organisations. Instead, difficult problems may be downloaded onto junior colleagues who are not in a position to refuse, and who may have more than enough to do to start with, which then has to be put aside and delayed unnecessarily.
Too busy to stop The havoc brought about by the ‘too busy to stop’ contingent can be serious. Ongoing routines may be disrupted, over-stressed staff may be stressed further, and employee
morale may be badly affected, resulting in considerable wastage of money and limited resources because of a well-paid few trying to prove how wonderful and indispensable they would have everyone else believe they obviously are. These practitioners of running about may
even fail to turn up for meetings that they have arranged at short notice, perhaps without realising that they view themselves as having ‘arrived’ (by having the sole privilege of not having to arrive in the first place!), or then leaving abruptly after showing up 45 minutes late and inconveniencing everyone else who could have put the time to much better use.
Appreciation It is more than a little worrying when those in responsible positions, who seem to be here, there, and nowhere at once, are supposedly unable to pass the time of day with others who require their support, or at least a modicum of appreciation. It would do well for all concerned,
especially those in a constant state of commercial chaos, to take stock of the implications of their actions. But, whether or not they would be willing to pause in
It is more than a little worrying when those in responsible positions, who seem to be here, there, and nowhere at once, are supposedly unable to pass the time of day with others who require their support, or at least a modicum of appreciation
order to accept well-meaning criticism about how they are conducting their working life and its effect on others is an open question. Perhaps what is really need is a good
dose of ego deflation along with an open and ready ear for listening. This could lead to greater efficiency and increased profitability, which is of prime concern in business life. It could also make for a much nicer place
for those under them to earn a living, and, at no extra cost. CCR
