some building work done on my house,” he recalled. “A lot of the demolition material was being taken away in big skips. One of the construction guys jokingly said to me: ‘It’d be better to bring in one of your crushers for a day.’

“At the time I said back: ‘To bring in one of my crushers we’d need to shut down the whole area with the sheer size of them: police, sirens, ropes, the lot.’ Yet that always stuck in my head; the thought that these guys need something.

“And those medium-sized builders are a key target audience for this sort of machinery. To be able to recycle the material they demolish is important and whether they are buying or just renting the machine there is an immediate return on their investment.”

Rock of ages

The impressive power and versatility of the machines was on display in early September when Komplet arranged an open day at the company headquarters in Senegallia on Italy’s Adriatic coast.

Despite weighing only 14 tonnes, their latest shredder, the Krokodile, was equally comfortable processing waste wood and concrete debris.

“The demonstrations today have left a really good impression,” said Gary Short of Shorts Group Ltd in Ascot. “We are

having our first Komplet machine - the Kompatto 221 - demonstrated for us at the moment and I expect we will buy it.

“The great thing about trips like this is that, as well as seeing the machines in action, you also get to make suggestions for tweaks and improvements. During the factory tour,

I spent time in the design office going through a few of the things we think could be improved, and they were very receptive - very open to suggestions and said they looked forward to more feedback when we try out a new machine.

“Ultimately, each of their machines is quite niche; I don’t see any other manufacturer making a full range like theirs.”

“Being a relatively small (but growing) company, we are also a quick-reacting company,” explained Alan Canestrari, sales manager for Komplet. “That means we can adapt our products according to the customer’s needs and turn it around in a short timeframe.

“You have to be adaptable in business and be able to move with whatever is driving your work.”

With legislation in the UK surrounding sending waste to landfill steadily increasing over the last 20 years and landfill tax increasing in step with it, the mature British market looks more than set to welcome the efficient solutions Komplet can bring.
