 Leyland Bison (2) 6x4 24 tonne chassis fitted with a Scapa Engineering 30 cubic yard Garwood FL3000 front end loader unit

Another first was the

introduction of the front-end loader mobile compaction vehicle in the late 1970’s.

Grundon also introduced the Waste Wheeler mobile compaction system in the early 1980s.

This system involved the roll out of 1.25 cubic yard cylindrical paladin type containers to light industry and commerce for the collection of light compactable wastes. To empty the paladin containers, Grundon purchased the first two 16 cubic metre David Mackrill Engineering Macload waste collection vehicles sold in the UK. This product was made under licence from Haller of Germany based on its Haller X2 waste collection vehicle product range by David Mackrill’s who anglicised the product to meet UK standards. The Macload’s had David Mackrill’s pencil bin hoist type lifting equipment fitted to them complete with side loading apertures for loose bagged wastes to

Trucking down memory lane

ERF EC8 MU3 crew cabbed 6x4 26 tonne chassis fitted with a Lacre PDE 22m3 22H25 rear loading 'Vulture' compaction unit complete with Combi-Pal bin lifting equipment. The vehicle was built for Municipal Vehicle Hire Ltd (MVH), which was a subsidiary company to Jack Allen (Sales and Service) Ltd. MVH provided a short, medium and long-term hire fleet of waste transportation vehicles for both local authorities and private sector operators throughout the UK. The vehicle is shown exhibited at the 1995 Institute of Wastes Management (IWM) Torbay exhibition, displayed on ERF Trucks stand.

be manually loaded into the Macload’s hopper. These were mounted onto Leyland Clydesdale 4x2 16 tonne chassis fitted with the Allison MT543 five speed automatic transmissions.

At this time, Grundon also took over the commercial waste collection service provided by Bracknell Forest Borough Council which included paladin container collection. Grundon used these two vehicles to mobilise this service as well as some of the council’s existing fleet of paladin vehicles.

Grundon continued its tradition of vehicle and equipment innovation through the 80s and into the 90s with a fleet profile consisting of mostly Leyland’s and ERF’S. The company was also the first in the UK to purchase an ERF EC10.30 MU4 8x4 32 tonne chassis which had the length of its cab shortened by 440mm to allow a front end loading mobile compaction unit to be mounted onto it. The chassis also featured the Allison HD4560 five speed automatic transmission. Jack Allen’s mounted a 44 cubic yard (large bustle) Heil Euro Half Pack front-end loading unit onto this chassis. The vehicle was an instant success, and more identical units were purchased from Jack Allen’s.

The company has continued with its developments since then and is providing customers with a sustainable waste transportation system well into the 21st century. Its 90-year legacy underpins the company’s developments in the use of innovative vehicles and equipment for the collection of solid and liquid wastes over this period.
