WASTE RECYCLING SigNET turns to ATK for baling needs
SigNET, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of audio life-safety equipment, has installed a waste baler from ATK Equipment at its facility in Tyne & Wear.
The RWM75 machine is now being used to deal with the ever-increasing amounts of waste recyclable materials held at the site – in the form of paper, plastic bags and cardboard.
Prior to sourcing a baler, the business relied on a local recycling company to provide four waste bins, where flat- packed cardboard was held until the time of the bi-monthly collection.
Louise Swallow, production manager at SigNET said: “The cardboard was taking up far too much factory space and increasing the risk of a fire. In addition, as the volumes increased, so did the cost, and we therefore looked at other options.

“Following web-based research, baling appeared a far safer and more cost- effective alternative, and when Bill Walton, managing director of ATK, responded to an enquiry then carried out
a site visit to assess our requirements, we were converted.”
The RWM75 machine was recommended – both for its simple operation and space- saving capabilities, and the minimal maintenance outlay required. Now fully Installed, the company produces between 8-10 bales per month, collected by a local recycling company, and for which a rebate is provided.
Louise continued: “I was extremely surprised at how much cardboard can fit into a single bale – the equivalent of two recycling bins.
“It’s great to have ATK on our doorstep for any issues which may arise – and the competitive rental rates offered, along with our safe, efficient new way of managing packaging waste, mean we couldn’t be happier!”

Bin weighing saves West Midlands recycling giant a tonne
JONES Skips, now the largest privately- owned recycling company in the West Midlands, has seen a significant impact on profitability since equipping its fleet with bin-weighing.
Andy Yeomans, Sales and Development Director at Jones Skips, said: “We used to know if bins were light or heavy but we didn’t know by how much. Then, a couple of years ago, we decided to have bin-weighing equipment retro-fitted to three of our vehicles and the difference to our bottom line was immediately apparent.
“Now we weigh every bin and print a ticket off where necessary, so it’s there in black and white. If a customer presents an overweight bin we first give them a warning, but if they continue to overfill bins we invoice them for the additional weight. The bin-weighing has paid for itself and made us a much more profitable business.”

Jones Skips has grown exponentially over the past seven years with its fleet increasing from 12 to 42 vehicles and its team expanding three-fold to over 80 employees. The company has now standardised the ENVIROWEIGH bin-weighing system from Vehicle Weighing Solutions Ltd (VWS) on its refuse vehicle fleet.
Andy added: “We are all about providing a good service, so reliability is extremely important.
The ENVIROWEIGH system is accurate, reliable and already certified for Pay by Weight services if we decide to offer that service in the future. VWS also provides an excellent after-sales service and they are able to calibrate and, if necessary,
re-certify the bin weighing equipment at our premises to minimise any vehicle downtime.”
