WASTE’17 - MANCHESTER, JUNE 8
A JUGGERNAUT of British engineering will be making a welcome return to the WASTE exhibition at Old Trafford, Manchester, on June 8, writes ANDREW GOLD.
Boughton setting new standards of excellence
Boughton Engineering Limited have been a trusted brand name in the waste and recycling sectors for decades, and their appearance at the recycling and waste event represents a major coup for WASTE’17 organisers.
The Wolverhampton-based manufacturers, whose Power- Reach skip-loader with Intacova sheeting system is an industry standard, have seen their stock firmly rise since they were taken over by Skan Group Holdings Limited in April 2011 after a period of financial turmoil.
Their six year turnaround has been remarkable, and with a thriving order book, they will arrive at the “Theatre of Dreams” on the crest of a wave and with a burgeoning order book.
Extraordinary Journey
It’s been an extraordinary journey for the well-known company, which dates to 1897 and announced a strategic partnership last year with American manufacturing giants McNeilus to mount, finish, market and support their front end loaders in the United Kingdom.
Group Managing Director Richard Skan and Sales and Marketing Director Steve Price are the driving forces behind the ambitious company, and both put the company’s growing success down to a very simple ethos – listening to customers.
MD Richard recalled the early days of the Skan Group Holdings Limited’s involvement in the firm, and how the company’s future was shaped by the marketplace.
He said: “We reviewed the product range Reynolds Boughton Limited had been building. We were clearly told by our customers not to change our hookloader because it is strong, reliable, durable , and robust - and easy to operate and maintain.
Engaged with our customers
“We embarked on developing and designing the brand new Boughton Power-Reach (PR18) 18,000kg GVW skip loader, and we engaged our customers in that process to give them what they wanted.
Another major wish list was to design a sheeting system which was not vulnerable to the grief this type of product normally gets. We came up with a very low profile sheeting system (the Intacova sheeting system), which has had a fantastic response and acceptance from our customers.”
Boughton's 2016 stand at the WASTE'16 show in Manchester last year proved popular with visitors
The reincarnation of the Boughton brand only came about after many hours of detailed design work by the company’s talented engineers and support staff.
Richard Skan continued: “We have had to contend with Euro 6 legislation, which meant all chassis manufacturers had to redesign their product range. This had implications on our equipment interfacing with the new chassis.
“Then we had the challenge of whole vehicle type approval, whereby all bodies for commercial vehicles needed to be type approved for any chassis on which we were mounting.
"There was a great deal of complexity to contend with in relation to our skip loaders and hook loaders.”
After updating their product range, Boughton’s next strategic move was last year’s McNeilus deal - which added a further option for their customers.
Steve Price said: “McNeilus were seeking a partner in the UK and went around some of our biggest customers, asking who they would like to take on this product. We were recommended by the customer base and by the market and now we have a really good strategic partnership.
Stability provided by Skan Group
“McNeilus have a vast knowledge of the US refuse market and their product ranges, while some of the people at Boughton have been in the refuse game for 25-30 years. We have both learned from each other."
Apart from excellent products, the stability provided by Skan Group Holdings and their long-term business approach has paid dividends for Boughton staff.
Richard Skan continued: “Our family policy and objective is to employ people for their careers. People are our greatest asset, in terms of value.

“We communicate that to our employees, so that gives them job security and they know they are part of the long term business success.
