New Boats Table

in association with the Spinlock Special Projects Team Christmas is coming The new 60-footer from Mylius Yachts would appear to have pretty much everything

With canting keel plus forward canard the new Mylius 60 CK performance-cruiser is an unmistakably performance-driven evolution of the successful Mylius 60FD fast cruiser – eight of which have now been sold. The family links are obvious but in practice Alberto Simeone,

designer of all the Mylius yachts, has penned a new concept of a genuinely fast –but still ‘sensibly’ comfortable –yacht based around the canard/canting keel configuration, with new hull lines and much developed structural and interior solutions. Cippa Lippa Xis the first Mylius yacht to feature a canting keel. The appendage solution used is not coincidental, the yacht’s

owner, Guido Paolo Gamucci, having campaigned a similarly configured Cookson 50 for many seasons with success. The Cariboni canting-keel system means there is plenty of stability

on tap within the boat’s reasonable 3.5m draft. Construction is all carbon with generous use of pre-preg in the primary structure and a dry ship displacement of just 15 tonnes. Compared with the Mylius 60FD the new hull takes account of

the higher sailing speeds predicted for the stiff new yacht, with fuller bow volumes, more flared mid-sections for form stability, a flat aft run for offwind performance and a reduced canoe body depth with significantly less rocker. Full female hull and deck tooling was manufactured so further boats can be delivered in due course. The deck has also been reconfigured for racing: twin steering

pedestals have been moved well forward and the mainsail traveller is now back aft. The hydraulic winch system takes its feed off the main engine, plus lightweight lithium batteries which are able to provide sufficient energy for general cruising duties. The light contemporary interior makes good use of clear-coat

carbon and light wood veneers with the canting-keel installation neatly hidden beneath the cabin sole. Similarly, the canard foil box and controls do not interfere with the living spaces. The interior layout is made up of a large owner’s cabin and two guest double- cabins with a separate crew cabin in the bow.

should take no more than two days, including the removal of much of the interior as well as substituting a longer racing bowsprit in place of the shorter sprit used for cruising. A rather pleasant machine on which to enjoy either a 600nm

offshore classic or a much longer transatlantic adventure... Giuliano Luzzatto
