The Luna Rossa America’s Cup team in the past could be relied upon to present beautifully built challengers, perhaps leaning slightly towards the conservative in terms of design. No such option was available under the new AC75 rule, however, but even so many were surprised just how aggressive the Italian team went with boat 1. Where Team NZ launched with a circular section bump under their hull to maintain aero endplate as the boat starts to lift, and to improve release from the water, Luna Rossa opted for this sharp, deeply V-shaped ‘keel’ – so sharp that the boat struggles to stay completely level when at rest. As for the trophy for the prettiest-looking AC75, same as always… Ciao
In the end what we can see may matter far less than what lies beneath. And that is before we even begin to consider the human factor: the strengths and frailties of the sailing teams and how they deal with pressure in the heat of battle. The cost of a wrong button- push, or a tactical error, or simply luck – none of these can be solved by a scientific equation no matter how multi-dimensional or sophisticated the analytical tool.
The racing will provide the ultimate answers. And even as we celebrate or mourn the result, we may still never fully understand everything about it. Ivor Wilkins

Grant Simmer – CEO, Ineos Team UK Seahorse: You have competed in 11 Cups and won it four times in different roles. Which was the toughest mentally? Grant Simmer: They were all difficult! I think the Deed of Gift Match in 2010 was probably one of the hardest, because it was on and off and on and off and we weren’t really sure when and how we were ever going to race. The boats were cool but also quite difficult. The other one was 2013 in San Francisco where we [Oracle] had that really big capsize and nearly lost the first boat. Then we had other penalties on the team with sailor bans and penalty points as a result of the AC45 scandal. It was a real mess at times – clearly in the end it worked out but only by the slimmest of slim margins. That campaign was probably the toughest mentally because those issues all happened during the final build-up to the Match. SH: This current AC class is such an unknown, which are the key areas that could win it… and which ones could certainly lose it? GS: The decider this time is the ability to sail the boat at close to optimum performance for the most time during the race and much of that hinges on having the best foil package. Also ride controls. How would you certainly lose it? You would lose it for sure if you had a catastrophic failure close to the Cup – these boats are highly loaded and pretty light so a big structural problem late in the day
