New Boats Table First of many? A purpose-designed IRC scow is up and running (in France of course)


Working in La Rochelle in partnership with foil specialist Kevin Arnaud, Antoine Mainfray is slowly making a name for himself as an innovative designer and builder of small performance boats. In the past known best for working with other builders and race


programmes, contributing to Volvo Ocean Race winner Groupama 4 and to Imocas including the previous Hugo Boss, Mainfray also previously worked at Marsaudon Composites in Lorient and with Class40 designer-du-jour Sam Manuard. Currently he has in build a Mini 6.50 that makes extensive use


of bamboo fibres, while Mainfray is also designer and builder at his Interface factory of several environmentally sensitive dinghies and mini-keelboats of between 18 to 25ft. All hand-crafted in plywood-epoxy, with carbon reinforcement, but similarly employing bamboo bio-composite elements wherever possible. In late 2021 Mainfray was approached by a former Mini 6.50


client looking to build a slightly larger boat with good seakeeping characteristics and competitive under IRC… but also with a sensible fit-out for some local cruising. The commission tied in nicely with the increasing attention the


La Rochelle designer had been paying to the evolution of the dual- purpose designs used for the many Transquadra events, for skippers over the age of 40. With the scow influence creeping into this fleet too – which competes under IRC – the time felt right to push harder in this direction with an experimental new IRC 30-footer. ‘The lines of our prototype were strongly influenced by the Imoca


scows and even more so by the latest generation of Class40s,’ says Mainfray. ‘However, for this recently launched Ace 30 I could

not use bamboo fibres as well; there is so much else that is new about the design that we needed to limit experimentation with the first boat if we were to learn as much as possible about employing the scow genre in the IRC system.’ Instead the hull and main structure are primarily in plywood-


epoxy, but with a composite coachroof used to lower the CoG. Similarly Mainfray’s Ace 30 is fitted with an IRC-favourable straight keel with no bulb. Dry displacement is light at 2,700kg, and with that reasonable seagoing interior. As requested. ‘Initial sailing trials have been encouraging,’ says the designer.


‘She is certainly very stiff, in terms of both mechanical stability and dynamic stability once moving at any speed. ‘The boat’s lightness plus the spatulated bow allows it to maintain


good average speeds downwind in waves, without jolting or violent decelerations. And like her bigger Class40 sisters she also stays pretty dry on deck – for most of the time…’
