television is a crucial factor. The combination of all this means that not everyone can host the America’s Cup. Fortunately, we do not have to build infrastructure specifically for the America’s Cup, but we will be squeezing the most out of our current facilities. SH: There is increasing talk about a possible French team that would require an extra base… DC: If a sixth team is confirmed we will place it in the Olympic Port, where we already intend to locate a Cup centre dedicated to younger people as well as to women. The idea is to improve the feeling of social inclusion and dilute the impression of an elitist competition only for those who have a lot of money. SH:Where will the America’s Cup Events host company be located? DC: ACE is already up and running in the World Trade Center build- ing – we proposed this location and they really liked it. We haven’t put them in a corner of the port or taken them to the city centre. They will be on the fifth floor, just below our own offices. The TV broadcast may end up based in the same building. SH: The main regatta village? DC: We will place it in the Moll de la Fusta. It is large and very accessible to the public. We also have space around the Hotel Vela, on the beach of St Sebastian and with the big breakwaters for tents or bleachers. We will make the most of our spaces so that people can see the regattas and enjoy the world of the America’s Cup, and we want them to stay in and around the port of Barcelona. SH: Superyachts? DC: There will be many and we want them to use the port and our services during the regatta. We must try to create as much space as possible for the superyachts to come – they are crucial to the local economy. We are studying different places, such as in front of the Rambla de Mar or at the fishermen’s pier… but only if we can agree a good solution with the Fishermen’s Guild! SH: A big question… will Port Barcelona have to put their hands into their pockets to host the America’s Cup? DC: The port does not, as a company we are not allowed to. We are a company that does not receive any budget from anyone, our only income is the port fees and we cannot use this revenue for anything other than port activity. We could say that we make a contribution in kind by donating our facilities, but we do not contribute anything to the fee requested by Team New Zealand. And any infrastructure work we do must be proved viable for future use. SH: Have you thought about the 2028 edition…? DC: I have to say that we haven’t – it’s a matter for the winner. Unlike Valencia, who built a new port to host the America’s Cup and had an agreement with Alinghi that included repeating the next edition if they won, this is not the case with us. So we remain patient. Our aim is to organise the best edition ever, to enjoy how a city can vibrate around a good America’s Cup – something the people of Auckland have already seen. Since the announcement our city has already been getting excited!
But let’s organise the 37th well and then we’ll see what happens. Carlos Pich
