A special boat Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström’s Judel-Vrolijk Maxi72 Rán 2 remains one of only four yachts to have taken back-to-back overall wins in the Fastnet Race since the first edition in 1925, Rán claiming the double in 2009 and 2011. The other three to have done so are Jolie Brise (the only three-time winner), Olin Stephens’ Dorade and Capt John Illingworth’s Laurent Giles design Myth of Malham. Rán’s designers thus sit in exalted company. Rán 2 was followed by a couple of TP52s before Zennström’s (and designer Shaun Carkeek’s) most dramatic boat to date, the Fast40 Rán 7 – which first rewrote the rulebook of how a Fast40 should look… and then added a chapter on how fast one can go. Rán 7 made every previous design obsolete, surviving Fast40s – fab yachts, by the way – now racing mainly in open IRC events where they perform very well (as fast boats generally do in IRC). While keeping his smaller inshore machine for regatta sailing, Zennström recently took delivery of Rán 8, another Shaun Carkeek design but this time a larger 52-footer configured to be equally competitive racing offshore – where water ballast allows this powerful new yacht to be sailed by a smaller crew. The Carkeek 52s are series-built in the UK by Fibre Mechanics with the same dramatic reverse sheer and ‘slashed’ foredeck of Zennström’s Fast40 –a genuine head-turner. So with a new water-ballasted 52-footer Rán head offshore again, no doubt with a third Fastnet win on the to-do list. Three-time race winner EG Martin would be thrilled

Not since the loss of our inspiring friend Steve Fossett can we think of an owner who has bet ‘maxi-serious’ dollars exploring a relatively unproven concept as Roberto Lacorte did when he said to his perhaps less than altogether relaxed designer, Mark Mills, ‘OK, let’s go for it…’ But an utterly bonkers idea, taking a Mini AC75 with an amusing little propeller offshore racing, did not look quite so bonkers when Lacorte’s crew flew their offshore foiler – it seems very easily – the first day they put the sails up
