New Boats Table A package for planet earth 64,000… that’s all you really need to know about the Polish-built Vector Mini 6.50

Yacht including mast and fittings – €42.000; seven sails €9,200; safety pack including liferaft and grab pack €3,700; electronics €9,100. A modern Mini Scow ready to go for €64,000. To anyone familiar with the costs of boats in the Mini class these

numbers are eye-opening and with queues of young sailors trying to join the circuit the introduction of the Vector 6.50 has to be a major step forwards. A foiling Mini Proto now sets you back €250,000-300,000+ (for a spartan 22-footer) and a new Series design is also now well into six figures. Olympic medallist and nine-time Tornado world champion Roland

Gaebler started the Vector programme to make it easier for those young sailors to get a foot in the door. Gaebler saw a place for a more affordable entry-level Mini, maybe not at the cutting edge but fully competitive and with the further possibility of one-design racing in the Baltic where the shorthanded scene is less frantic. Working with designer Etienne Bertrand and finding a builder in Yacht

Services in Poland, who were already exploring ideas along similar lines, Gaebler assembled an impressive value-for-money package. Interest in the Minis exploded this year; it accelerated even faster

when it became clear that 30-odd skippers, many already qualified, would not start this year’s Mini Transat due to excess demand for places. Hence a rush of orders for new boats to get afloat well ahead of the next race in 2023. Today there are 10 Vectors on order, 20 Pogo 3s from Structures Shipyard, plus strong orders at other yards able to deliver a good Mini within the timeframe. If the Vector proves fast enough to get more people into the

class, avoids reliability issues and the price can be kept close to the current level then Gaebler, Bertrand and Yacht Services will have done offshore sailing a favour.

The inside of a Mini Scow is no place to hold a party… but it is a palace compared to a ‘skiff’ design. The Series Class prohibits canting keels which further adds to the scope for family cruising

LAUNCH COMMENTS Summer 2021onwards

Finot are back. Scow hull, foils, telescoping canting keel, rudder T-foils and, and, and…

Summer 2021 onwards There was no way Verdier were going to miss out on some more Mini foilers Summer 2021 onwards It’s the full pile-on now that the Minis have gone foiling

Feb 2020 onwards The things you can do with plants, cork and recyclable Sicomin GreenPoxy resin End 2021 onwards This sophisticated bilge-keel IRC bandit will soon be available with epoxy/wool/tea construction End 2021 Late 2021

New Riptide iteration for Peter Heppel. Very slippery, simple water ballast. More on this soon An interesting new take on a small offshore racer. Canting keel plus twin daggerboards

Winter 2021, ’22 or... Healthy 5.5 revival going on with Wilke also turning out their fast turnkey Séb Schmidt design Autumn 2021 onwards Four on the way (then a pause to knock out some Imocas) – VPLP enter the Class40 Autumn 2021 onwards The latest Lift40 is much more scow. First boat already looking promising August 2019 onwards A class 24-hour record in its first race… three sailing and at least two more sold Autumn 2021

Summer 2021 onwards Boat 1 and 2 afloat and rocking… five more on order. Already building in twos! End 2021

Another one-off development of Crédit Mutuel. Sponsored by Volvo Belgium Interesting commercial charter catamaran from a design team who know how it’s done

IRC racer-racer-cruiser also with influence from Carkeek’s eye-catching Fast40s Glorious-looking wishbone una-rigged canoe. Best thing we’ve seen for quite a while Already very well advanced as Persico crack on with their latest extravaganza The floodgates opened immediately and Charal 2 will be among the first out of the trap Pouring through… a new Imoca scow for Boris Herrmann and the first from VPLP He sold L’Occitane so fast that he had to re-order quickly… Armel Tripon, that is The decision is made, the current boat is sold and Sam Davies will have a new Imoca for 2024 Jörg Riechers has put his new project together with this German luxury electric yacht brand Maxime Sorel’s new Imoca (Monbana Chocolates/V&B) will be a tweaked Apivia sistership Yannick Bestaven’s new boat is being built in the 11th Hour moulds Project now taken over by PRB for Kevin Escoffier’s VG 2024 programme

Arkea Paprec will have a new boat – but have dispensed with the services of Sébastien Simon Just another typical fully foiling 70ft day racer (and daysailer…) for three to five crew (sic) The ink is not yet dry but a foiling 100-footer is definitely coming… More lucky measurers Gorgeous. Classic pilot cutter looks allied with modern design and heavy eco focus The biggest yet from Persico. Very light at 171 tonnes.
