Update
Three staysails? Given the limited space between the mast and the tip of the bowsprit, we decided to move the medium (middle) staysail tack not only out- board but also further aft. The aft position in turn allows room for a third staysail. This has the same effect as sheeting the sail wider (the tack and clew aligned more across the boat). The medium and small staysails can be trimmed tighter while flying closer to the rig and further away from the spinnaker. This opens up available air space between the medium and large sail. When the wind builds and the boat starts to get ‘nosey’ the
largest, furthest forward SS can be furled. The remaining two stay- sails together provide the same area as the large SS alone, while their aft tack positions reduce heeling force and bow down attitude. When the wind drops we quickly furl the largest staysail as the
sail begins to blanket the spinnaker. With two smaller staysails set again we maintain sail area while increasing the space for wind to travel between the medium staysail (tacked aft) and the spinnaker. An added bonus was we didn’t need to purchase additional sails,
as the small and medium staysails are existing sails built for triple- head reaching with MH0 or R1, with all sails tacked on the centreline. Lastly, under Transpac rules there is no rating penalty for flying
three staysails. This alone could have been a deal-breaker. The small caveat is we can only use the fractional halyard for the large staysail (although it would set better from the 2nd masthead halyard). So after determining that extra sail area can fit in the available
space, the next problem was working out which halyards to use, how to tension the luffs and trim them without adding more winches. Warrior Won has eight winches. With five sails in the air some
new thinking was required. Our solution was to add purchase systems down either side of the boat. These are used for a few different things including upwind in-hauling the jib clew, adjusting the outboard jib leads up/down when reaching and tensioning the windward medium staysail halyard from the tack (the head is on the jib halyard lock) when VMG running. Couple this with a second mini-purchase system for the small staysail sheet and we are off (and er, running) with every winch earning its spot onboard.
DOWNWIND BY NUMBERS Traditional three-sail set-up: mainsail (104m2), spinnaker (270m2), large SS (68m2). Total 442m2. New five-sail set-up: main (104m2), spinnaker (270m2), large
SS tacked on centre max-forward (68m2), medium SS tacked to windward and aft (55m2), small SS tacked to windward (19m2). Total: 516m2. While we certainly didn’t sail the whole way to Hawaii in this
configuration we did plenty of hours sailing above our old VMG numbers to easily justify the small weight addition of extra padeyes. Final result: 2021 Transpac first overall.
