Sean Langman’s much travelled yet always immaculate Ranger Class Maluka is readied for shipping to Europe and this year’s Fastnet. The pocket gaff-rigger is in her 82nd season but after a major rebuild at Langman’s Noakes yard she turns up every Boxing Day like clockwork to race to Hobart. As the smallest and oldest boat to regularly line up for Australia’s big race, Maluka always puts bigger rivals to shame, one of her many highlights being that remarkable 8th overall in 2006

We’re now well into our domestic season and already seeing really strong numbers for all of our races. One added piece of value we have introduced this year is pre-race briefings by one of France’s most respected meteorologists and routeurs Christian Dumard. For the Rolex Fastnet Race we will also be holding an additional extended 90-minute webinar by Christian covering all the key points of the race, later followed by a ‘last-orders’ pre-race briefing. All briefings are online with invites sent out to every entrant – the intention is to deliver them the evening before the respective starts. We have a busy few months of races coming up, prior to the 50th


edition of the Fastnet Race, a significant landmark in this club’s history. We have also been handed a great opportunity for our sailors aged 30 and under with the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour (30 June to 31 July) starting in Genova and finishing in Venice. This race runs over eight stages and RORC has been given a wildcard entry which covers the free charter of one of the Figaro 3 one-designs used for the event. Contact: griffin@rorc.org. to compete in the female two-handed offshore Mediterranean Championships, again raced in the Figaro 3 – scheduled to run 7-16 September and starting in Venice. Again, if you’re interested… griffin@rorc.org. When this edition comes out we’ll just have concluded the IRC


European Championships which this year are hosted by the Yacht Club de Cannes. Normally the IRC Europeans are held in the Medi - terr anean every two years but sadly the pandemic interrupted the cycle and this will be the first time they have been staged in the Mediterranean since San Remo 2019. At the end of June we also have our own UK IRC Nationals from


Friday 23 June through to Sunday 25 June in Cowes. Before the IRC Nationals we have the hugely popular Morgan Cup Race to Dartmouth. At the time of writing, with still a month to go until the race, we have 71 entries already paid up. Finally, don’t forget that for the Fastnet Race the minimum experience is now 300nm of

offshore racing on the boat entered in the race, completed by a minimum of 50 per cent of the crew including the person in charge within 12 months of the race start. Something new this year is the IRC Two-Handed European


Champion ships, which will take in two races, the first La Trinité- Cowes and the second the Cowes-St Malo. These championships are already shaping up to be highly competitive as northern Europe has the biggest two-handed racing fleets in the world. We have now opened entries for the 10th edition of the Trans -


atlantic Race and the 15th edition of the Caribbean 600. The next Transatlantic Race will start on 7 January 2024 from Lanzarote, finishing in Grenada, a 3,000-mile crossing. New for this edition is an official Superyacht Class for boats 24m or over with a displace- ment/length ratio of no less than 90. Thank you to our rating office for researching and then defining this new division. We also shouldn’t forget we again have our Classic Class for boats built before 1981. Next year is also the 15th edition of the Caribbean 600, the


biggest offshore race in the Caribbean and a race that has now established itself as one of the 600nm classics. The next race starts on Monday 19 February 2024. Prior to the 600 we will be staging the second edition of the Nelson’s Cup, which starts with two days of inshore racing on 13-14 February. Then on Friday 16 February we have the Antigua 360, followed on the Monday by the Caribbean 600 start to make up the new series. This year’s inaugural event was won by Niklas Zennström’s CF520 Rán. The Cowes clubhouse is back to summer hours so please come


along and enjoy great views across the Solent from the terraces, adding perhaps a sundowner gin ’n tonic with our own newly launched RORC Gin, developed in partnership with the Salcombe Gin Com- pany. We are also proud to have joined Salcombe Gin’s ocean initiative where we donate one per cent of every bottle sold to the Marine Conservation Society to help protect and regenerate precious ocean habitats.
