My friend Nic Bailey had designed and built his MTC 40 trimaran a few years before and when I bumped into him working alongside Nigel Irens in the 1990s I was taken by a pretty little racing trimaran he’d designed for a French client, but that had not yet been built. We discussed hull shapes for a new boat and the evolution that
had gone from V sections, through to rounder sections, that although lower wetted surface, slammed horribly, and chatted about a modified form with lower volume aft in the amas (floats) to induce a ‘bow-up’ attitude when pressed, but still with 200 per cent buoyancy and a bit more volume in the main hull for a roomier interior… And I then heard nothing for months. Then one day Nic turned
up out of the blue while I was in Dartmouth with a set of sketches for the MTC 28. And I was lost. And so it was that in my mid-40s I decided to go for it, launching
just 10 years later… and after several thousand mostly enjoyable man-hours. Support from family and friends is everything. I was lucky in that respect. As well as Nic, the designer, I had access to wisdom from the brains of Nigel Irens and Adrian Thompson – both of whom I’d worked with in the 1980s and who were inspirational, to say the least. Also a wonderful mine of information on engineering and feet-on-the-ground realist in the shape of JuIian Smith (Fibre Content). I had a heated shed, enough knowledge but not a large budget and no deadline to finish. All the ingredients were there or near… The design is lightweight,
powerful, modern. I wanted it to be demountable for winter storage, but not a ‘trailer-sailor’. Fast was really what it is all about and she will go like greased lightning inshore (I don’t like being out of sight of land) without needing more than a couple of crew. The boat when finished had a secondhand aluminium Firebird rig
and it was never slow, but this year I’ve completed, with a little help from my friends at Independent Composites, possibly the stiffest high-modulus carbon mast ever seen on a boat of this type. And the transformation in terms of performance is astonishing. She’s all carbon/epoxy/Airex foam sandwich and light (827kg all up) because of my obsession with keeping it so at every step

of the way. For example, all three hull skin laminates are laid in one piece, longitudinally with no overlaps. The main hull is laminated with a super-wide 2.5m carbon Biax, taking care of the torsional loads between the beams, that allows for a nice doubling only along the keel line where it interleaves a band of unidirectional tape for fore-and aft stiffness. No other overlaps are required as it runs com- pletely in one piece to the hull/deck join. Other strategic reinforce- ments by way of beam connections and so on were all vacuum bagged, with the whole being lightly baked and then, when in primer, the primary structure placed in a giant bubble-wrap tent for a complete post-cure. This was the night I slept in the workshop. I’ve discovered the truth is that I’m more the builder than the
sailor. She has really hardly been used at all and has been molly- coddled all her life on her mooring in south Devon. Time for her, and me, to move on, I feel. Drop me a line if you are interested. Wiz Deas, Devon
