New Boats Table

in association with the Spinlock Special Projects Team At it again

Designer, boatbuilder and Olympic medallist Jo Richards has come up with another out-of-the-box creation for RS Sailing… along with his design partner Guy Whitehouse

Designed like the super-successful lightweight RS Aero singlehander by Jo Richards, working in partnership with Isle of Wight neighbour Guy Whitehouse, the RS21 was created to respond to the need for a progressive, simple and affordable solution for keelboat clubs that increasingly see the opportunity for fleet ownership and pay-as-you- go sailing. Close racing has been prioritised over ultimate performance with the emphasis on user-friendliness and sensible running costs. To keep things sensible and avoid the human arms race that has

now overwhelmed other small keelboat classes there is a no-hiking rule – plus two sailplan choices, One Design and Club Spec. High form stability and an almost 50 per cent ballast ratio ensure

enjoyable sailing upwind as well as down, while sharp chines contribute to form stability, shed water and lead to a drier ride. The generous rocker will also help ensure good performance in lighter airs. The GRP-sheathed bulb keel can be raised using an internal crane,

or removed completely, which allows the RS21 to be multi-stacked for transport to events – six boats can be fitted in one 40ft container. Transport is further helped by use of a two-piece carbon mast which stows securely within the boat’s cockpit.

Sustainability The RS21 was designed from the start to incorporate eco-friendly materials into the construction – the bio-derived resins and recycled core materials used leading the way in one-design keelboat production.

RS Sailing also worked with Torqeedo to create a neat lifting electric motor propulsion solution which got an enthusiastic reception when the boat was launched at the 2017 Dusseldorf Boat Show. Similarly, Scanstrut were brought in to develop bespoke electrical

components, one interesting spin-off being an automated performance data-capture system that can assist with learning and perhaps even add some talking points for the friendly but competitive RS community. Scanstrut are equipping each RS21 with its own data logger sending information automatically to the open-access class website. Oh yes, and 12 of the brand new RS21s were sold on the opening q

day of the Dusseldorf Show… LAUNCH

Great-looking IRC pot-hunter with a super-stylish interior; cracking value as well The latest Yes! is a very special example of today’s must-have IRC design Two new Fast40s, the latest Rán and boat no3 in the Girls on Film line Fifth-generation Max-RM Class40 from a new yard. Second boat well underway The Carkeek Fast40+ Mk3 followed the family tradition by winning the 2017 championship Development of the A13 Teasing Machine 2. Boat no1 quickly impressed Quite aggressive design approach. A quietly resurgent fleet – now with OD foils Alegre/Longitud Cero; Luna Rossa/Persico; Onda/King; Phoenix/Persico Quantum/Composite Builders/Persico Platoon/Premier Yachts; Provezza/Persico

Expect this new IRC56 to be giving the latest Teasing Machine some competition A possible run of yet another lightweight and fast luxury cat. Lift foils and daggerboards Another Figaro frontrunner gets the big break. François Gabart protégée… Jérémie Beyou gets a new sponsor and his first brand new Imoca 60

This will be interesting, a new Imoca 60 for Sébastien Simon managed by Vincent Riou Now in the Hugo Boss new boat pipeline but who will get to race its proven predecessor?

Based on Finot-Conq’s Imoca 60 work, very purposeful carbon/Nomex 53-footer heavily race-influenced but designed for long-range cruising with a double-handed crew. The foils are all retractable to maximise shoal access

Young Swiss skipper Alan Roura’s trusty 2006 Imoca is gaining foils from Mick Kermarec Whizzy IRC-targeted racer-cruiser. Looks like a mini-Cannonball Very light (17-tonne) all-carbon double una-rig cruiser-racer! The design R&D is almost finished for the new Bella Mente Contemporary performance cruiser, possible series production? There are also a 96 and a 70 on the drawing board. MSY is on a roll Smaller Wally is aggressively styled and reflects the latest Maxi72s

She’s back in the shed being speeded up… with a new one starting in 18 months! Lots of wrapping paper needed – a first one-off custom Superyacht from Swan The biggest yet from Persico. Very light at 171 tonnes. Hybrid power for silent running

One of no fewer than seven new TP52s from the Botín studio, the latest Quantum programme will run alongside the New York Yacht Club America’s Cup challenge – with plenty of crossover in crew and technical development
