SAFE FREE FLYING SAILS FURLERS

Automatic locking mechanism of the drum (patented).

Left: Paul Cayard with Sir Durward Knowles and the large group of local youngsters who turned out to honour the 100-year-old Olympic gold medallist and 1947 Star World Champion during the Star Sailors League Final in Nassau. Cayard raced the first Vintage Gold Cup last year (top) in Knowles’ Olympic champion boat Gem IX, winning the event with crew Brian Faith. Fifty-three years earlier Knowles and Cecil Cooke (above) sail Gem back in after securing the gold medal at the 1964 summer Olympics in Tokyo to add to the bronze medal he won at Melbourne in 1956

The next day I called Durward and showed him the fleet and had

him chat to some of the other competitors, like Mark Reynolds and John MacCausland, whom he knew well. Can you imagine the evolution in his 100 years… to see things through a phone? I spent a lot of time with Durward in his last three months. I was

at his 100th birthday party in November and I visited him almost every afternoon during the Star Sailors League finals in December. On 5 February, in between Star regattas, I went over for the day and had lunch with him, Holly and their eldest daughter Jill. Reminiscing about Star regattas was his favourite subject. Still sharp as a tack, he could remember details from regattas in the 1940s. On 20 February I spoke to his youngest, Charlotte, who told me

he was in the hospital battling pneumonia. As I had bought Gem IX in the time since seeing Durward on 5 February, I told her to reassure him that I would take care of the boat for him. When she told him about Gem, although he couldn’t speak, a great smile appeared on his face. I think he died a happy man! On 5 March, the day of his funeral in Nassau, the 72 competitors

at the Bacardi Cup in Miami gathered at 0900 for a short ceremony to pay tribute to the Star Class legend on the lawn of the Coral Reef Yacht Club. It was perfect that a large and illustrious group of Star sailors were together to pay our respects. On the water, prior to the start of Race 1, all boats took up the

course of 100° for a one-minute tribute, aiming our bows at Nassau. Slack your hand, Mon! Let de boat walk.
