Flying Nikka Driving with an intense focus at high speed at night in foul weather comes naturally to Roberto Lacorte, when he races his 220mph Dallara at the Le Mans 24 Hours. Racing cars is his other passion beside sailing, managing to compete at the highest level in both sports simultaneously. After four Maxi titles with our 62ft SuperNikka design he decided to explore foils with two Persico 69Fs, winning the inaugural season title and discovering a love for high-speed flying… Excited by the possibility of an offshore-capable flying boat he

tasked us with investigating a pathway to big boat foiling for 2022. As vice-president of the International Maxi Association it clearly had to be able to compete one day in IMA events, so minimum size was set at 18.3m; beyond this it was a clean sheet of paper. The primary goals were an early take-off for racing in the predominantly light winds of the Mediterranean, all-round foiling capability, rather than just at reaching angles, some capacity to continue racing beneath foiling windspeed, and the ability to meet all the Cat 3 criteria for events including the popular 151 Miglia race… created by Lacorte himself. Having been heavily involved in the design and development of the

Imoca scow L’Occitane our usual development partners KND Perfor- mance had plenty of insight into the strengths and limitations of this type of foil geometry. We soon agreed that retractable Imoca-style foils even with a rudder elevator would be too limiting, and that the more versatile AC75 configuration would be required. This would clearly be significantly more challenging for the design team and the crew, opening up a new level of performance where in optimal conditions a 150nm race like the 151 Miglia could be completed in under five hours. The comparison with the AC75 in some ways ends there. If the

AC75 is the F1 of today’s sailing landscape, then the boat needed to race in coastal and offshore races must be closer to Roberto’s Le Mans car: capable of running at consistent averages for extended

IRC racer-racer-cruiser with influence from Carkeek’s eye-catching Fast40s Not an easy ‘craft’ to pigeon hole in early 2021… but at least now you know Verdier Imoca for The Ocean Race for 11th Hour Racing For sale: half-built boat for The Ocean Race, buyer collects

Impressive-looking IRC cruiser-racer from an interesting but little-known design studio We know it looks stunning… and incorporates flax and wicker in the build Boat no1 of a series build of a new and stylish carbon lift-keel racer-cruiser Interesting performance cruiser with foil-assist for righting moment and pitch-damping All the pieces are now beginning to come together at das submarine base… The hulls are now all at HQ in Lorient while François Gabart hits the boardrooms The first one-off custom Superyacht from Swan. One to look forward to

Gorgeous. Classic pilot cutter looks allied with modern design and heavy eco focus The biggest yet from Persico. Very light at 171 tonnes. Hybrid power for silent running Big, fast and fruity-looking new cruiser-racer from Rolf. Should launch regatta ready

periods of time in a much wider range of conditions. Our job is to produce an endurance three-point foiler, able to sail in a wide range of wind speeds including sub-foiling and robust enough not to require an AC shore team working overnight to prepare it for sailing. Weight is the largest obstacle to successful foiling, requiring very

high-quality engineering and construction implemented in ways to deliver a suitable factor of safety and reasonable service life. Such a trade-off is reflected throughout this programme: highly responsive control systems need to be easy to install and maintain, a deep and powerful sailplan must become a very flat, low-drag sailplan instantly and capable of major alterations in area by a limited number of crew. We are now well into these decisions with a team including KND,

Pure Engineering, headed by Giovanni Belgrano, foil specialist Nat Shaver and aero development from North Design. We are using AC75 design tools including Team NZ’s Dan Bernasconi’s Gomboc VPP. We also follow AC75 developments closely… paying special attention to where not to go in our bid to produce an endurance foiler. Mark Mills, Ireland

Finot are back. Scow hull, foils, telescoping canting keel, rudder T-foils and, and, and… There was no way Verdier was going to miss out on some more Mini foilers It’s the full pile-on now that the Minis have officially gone foiling (reliably)

Interesting commercial charter catamaran from a design team who know how it’s done The first of these more affordable Rán-styled IRC52s includes the water ballast option

Less well known than some rivals but Bertrand has designed some of the fastest Mini ‘skiffs’ An interesting new take on a small offshore racer. Canting keel plus twin daggerboards

Strong 5.5 revival going on with Mader also turning out a fast turnkey Séb Schmidt design A second new UK 5.5 doubles the size of the embryonic Cowes fleet (OK, plus an oldie or two) A nice-looking new IRC/ORC design from a new Brazilian yard – one to watch VPLP enter the Class40 market. Second boat already sold and tooling for a production run The new Lift40 is much more scow. Two boats building on opposite sides of the globe
