As well as technical and measurement advances, the International Rating Certificate (IRC) and the Channel Handicap System (CHS) from which it developed have seen a variety of administration software versions since inception. Back in 1985, which was the first full year of CHS certificates, the ratings were processed in GWBASIC. In this program the staff in the rating office had to enter all the data manually and proceed strictly from one page to the next - if an input needed changing it was necessary to go to the end of the input process and start again. Certificates were printed in duplicate on a dot-matrix printer and sent out in the post, with each boat having a paper file where the copy certificate and all correspondence were kept. Jump forward to 1999/2000 with the introduction

of IRC2000, when CHS changed its name to IRC, and a new data input and rating calculation system had been written in Visual Basic with an Access database. This system allowed the rating staff to move between the different sections - for hull, rig and sail data inputs for instance. By this time the new application form was in Excel format, and later this was further developed to enable importing straight into the software to avoid manual input. Certificates could now be produced as PDFs and emailed out to owners. In 2008 there was an important advance when the RORC Rating Office and the UNCL Centre de Calcul started accessing a single set of software and database on the same server based in the UK, rather than working from duplicate versions of the software in each office with separate databases. Move forward to 2012 and the introduction of an online portal called MyIRC for IRC applications was introduced for UK sailors; we hope to be able to introduce this worldwide in the not too

ORC/IRC World Championship 2022 new dates

The second edition of the biennial ORC/IRC World Championship will be held from 23 June to 1 July 2022 in Porto Cervo, Italy. A large fleet is expected to take part in Porto Cervo with organization provided by the Yacht Club Costa

Smeralda; the new dates have been chosen to avoid any overlap with the Rolex Giraglia regatta scheduled for mid-June. The Notice of Race for the 2022 ORC/IRC World Championship will be published in June 2021, one year ahead of the regatta.

distant future.

During 2020 a new IRC administration application has been written which is being used for producing all IRC certificates from January 2021 and you will immediately have noticed that your IRC certificate looks different! The new application uses a combination of software languages, including Python for the IRC TCC calculation for easy development and research by the IRC technical committee. It also includes a new interface and graphical check of the boat to ensure correct data input.
