Rossett Windbrook Festive is Andrew’s current herd favourite. Classified EX92 this third calver gave 9484kg at 4.01%bf and 3.47%p in her second lactation. She is highly fertile calving at 23 months as a heifer and every 12 months since.

Another favourite is Rossett Goldwyn Sweet, a VG88 second calver. Her dam was purchased fresh out of Beeston, she was flushed and calved a heifer calf before being sold on. Andrew is a firm believer that you make your own luck and need to keep trying to succeed. He has managed to get in to good cow families by trusting his own judgement and sticking to a budget. One of his famous sayings is ‘if you are doing the job right there is

another good one in the heifer shed’ and he has never been afraid to sell a good animal and often picks up animals from families such as Sweet and Rachel for less than 1000gns, flushes them, gets a natural heifer calf out of them and sells them on fresh calved. Home grown families Maria and Festive are the most prominent and consistent at Rossett. At one time there were six generations of the Maria family alive in different herds across the country including Andrew Wilson’s North Shields and Colin Dent’s Bridgend herds.

The Jones family have also built up a vast number of international families which Andrew believes are attractive to potential buyers looking for groups of cattle. The families include: Roxy, Kimo, Dellia, Adeen, Sara, Oralie, Farrah,

Raven, Polly, Shower, Beauty, Laurie Sheik, Ghost and Sweet. There is something for everyone in the herd and Andrew likes to cover all bases when he is having a sale, so keeps the odd red and white cow to attract that niche market too.

Andrew and Jenny’s three daughters Vicky, Gemma and Larissa have all promoted the herd through HYB. Vicky is married to David Matthews and they have a daughter Mia. Vicky is a midwife and David has recently started working with Andrew at Rossett. Gemma works for Müller as a national account manager on the Tesco account and Larissa is UK product manager for Genus; she is also heavily involved in Young Farmers and is currently lady chair of Malpas YFC and Dairy Queen of Cheshire YFC.

Andrew and Jenny Jones’ son in law, Dave Matthews, has recently joined the team at Rossett.

Andrew’s current herd favourite is Rossett Windbrook Festive EX92, now in her third lactation she is pictured as a heifer.

Rossett Goldwyn Sweet is a VG88 second calver.
