Making hospital toilets more accessible

T

he Department of Health and Social Care has announced a £2m fund to create at least 100 ‘Changing Places’

assisted accessible toilets in NHS hospitals throughout England. Supplier and installer, Closomat, the

only company of its kind that is fully Construction Design & Management compliant, will be instrumental in delivering these facilities, offering complete project management services. Commenting on the funding, Minister

for Care, Caroline Dinenage, said: “People with disabilities and their carers rightly expect to find suitable facilities in hospitals of all places.” Closomat’s CDM compliance and project co-ordinator, Claire Haymes,

added: “Disabled people make up more than a third of patients who access NHS services; and they also access those services more than able people. “Many of them need the extra

space and equipment provided by a Changing Places toilet, but which are not available in conventional wheelchair-accessible facilities. “Yet only about 20% of hospitals in

England have Changing Places toilets. “The whole point of a Changing

Places toilet is to enable someone who needs help to go to the toilet to do so with the appropriate space and equipment.”

• Showering at the bedside Manufacturer, Reval, is bringing showers to the bedsides of patients and care home residents. The Ruby Mobile Shower System is made up of a lightweight and waterproof sheet which is positioned underneath the patient and fastens to the siderails, head, and footboards. It accommodates the patient while ensuring full water containment from the shower hose, and can be laundered for re-use. Eddie Cheung, head of operations at care provider, Persona Care & Support, has used the product and said: “Maintaining personal hygiene is particularly important for people who are prone to infections, and when people can’t have a ‘proper’ wash easily, it can affect their self esteem. We can fix that with Ruby.”
