in brief • Creating a ‘Healthier Wigan’
Construction milestone for East Lothian hospital
M
orrison Construction has reached a major milestone in the creation of the new
East Lothian Community Hospital in Haddington. The health facility, designed by
Keppie Design and being delivered for NHS Lothian with development partner, Hub South East, has reached the fully- weathertight stage. Built on the existing Roodlands Hospital
site, the installation of the roof and windows for the three-storey, 22,000sqm development have been completed. And, externally, the render and
cladding is nearing completion, giving passers-by an idea of what the new community hospital will look like once finished. Work on the drop-off zone at the
entrance of the facility and tar surfacing are also well underway. Inside, the development work
continues, with internal partitioning, decorating and services connection works progressing across the facility. Morrison Construction project
director, Philip Galbraith, said: "Due to the winter weather it was important for us to reach this milestone. ‘‘While there are still external works
to be undertaken, more of our focus will now move to the internal works of the development. “Due to the phased construction
programme, different sections of the build are at different stages and our focus is now on the planned sequence as we work toward completion.” Richard Park, operations director for
Hub South East, added: “Following the successful delivery of the outpatient department last year, it’s exciting to see the remainder of the development taking shape. “This is the largest-value project on
site in Scotland through the hub programme and we’re proud it’s progressing so well. “We’re now another step closer to
the overall community hospital becoming a reality and helping to improve the healthcare facilities available to residents in East Lothian.” The full programme of works for the
hospital redevelopment, the last phase of which includes the construction of a new car park, should be completed by early next year.

Eric Wright Health and Care, in partnership with Wigan Council and Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group, has started construction of a £4m health centre in Ashton in Makerfield, Wigan. Situated on the site of the former town hall, the scheme is a showcase for the Healthier Wigan initiative, aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of local residents. The 1,100sq m building will comprise two GP practices on the first floor, with the ground floor used for community services, including the integrated health and social care teams. There is also a meeting and community area designed so it can be used out of hours. Additional features include an ambulance standby point; and solar panels have been installed to improve the building’s sustainability credentials.

• Funding for life-saving helipads Two life-saving projects have received funding from the Helicopter Emergency Landing Pads (HELP) Appeal. Perimeter lighting at the Dorset County Hospital helipad has been upgraded from the original white lights to modern green LED lights, making the site more visible. And the helipad at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness has been upgraded to meet the increasing demand for larger and more-frequent aircraft, as well as to meet new standards such as landing lights and helipad size.
