surfaces – infection prevention
Mobile carts get the UV treatment T
he potential for mobile desks and carts to spread infection in hospitals is being addressed
through a new partnership between Ergotron and UV Partners. UV Partners’ UV light disinfection
technology is being intregrated into Ergotron’s standing desk and cart product lines as a part of a move by the manufacturer to enhance infection prevention and control. The UV Angel automated disinfection
system will now be available in Ergotron’s CareFit Pro and StyleView products. Charles Christ, chief technology
officer and senior vice president of Ergotron, said: “This joint initiative is a game changer for hospitals, clinics and other healthcare environments concerned with reducing pathogens that can lead to serious, and even deadly, infections. “Together with UV Angel technology,
we are providing a best-in-class solution that moves healthcare, and healthcare providers, forward by greatly reducing the threat of hospital-borne infections and allows caregivers to focus more of
their energy on patients.” UV Angel is an intelligent, automated
UV-C light disinfection system that continuously monitors surfaces to detect when they have been used and automatically disinfects hundreds of times a day without any direct assistance from staff. A recent clinical study demonstrated
that bacteria levels were reduced by more than 99% on surfaces equipped with the technology. Tom Byrne, chief executive of UV
Partners, said: “We’re committed to advancing the development of our technology platform in the fight against bacteria-related infections to provide safer and healthier environments for patients, customers, employees and their families. “This initiative is a great example of
how we work with companies to seamlessly integrate our UV Angel technology to deliver products that address mission-critical events in healthcare environments.”

A winning design
T
he new Maggie’s Centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital was named Supreme Winner at the
2019 Surface Design Awards. The development, designed by
Steven Holl Architects, was chosen from a shortlist of 43 projects across seven categories and also picked up the Award for Best Public Building Exterior. The structure of the building is a
branching concrete frame with an inner layer of bamboo and an outer layer of matte white glass with coloured glass fragments. The special matte-glass exterior,
developed in collaboration with Okalux, features flat and curving panels filled with Okalux fibers that insulate and create a textured, luminous translucency. And the interior is shaped by colored
light washing the concrete floors and bamboo walls. Judge, Christophe Egret, said of the
project: “You really feel that a person dealing with cancer might feel elevated in this space.”
