INTRODUCING

ZOOM is primarily a computer Internet service. However, it is possible to attend Zoom events meetings using audio only, eg, via a landline telephone.

The Zoom program operates as a web- based application through most web browsers; or by installing the Zoom app. It is platform independent, so may be used with Windows, Mac, Linux, Apple phones, Android phones, tablets and even Blackberry phones. Zoom offer various online resources that provide help and insights about their tools and features. Check out the searchable Zoom Help Centre to discover how something works, or to solve any difficulty: https://support.zoom.us/hc/ en-us.

Those who are solely participants in an online conference, webinar or other meeting do not have to install any software. However, those who plan to host meetings and/or wish to enjoy the full benefits provided by the Zoom platform are recommended to install the full Zoom software.

As a direct result of the Covid-19 pandemic, many of us have been turning to online webinar programs to hold meetings, conferences, educational courses, training and more. The Zoom® application has proved the most popular so, for those new to this facility, we asked Eric Thorn to provide some very basic information for getting started. Please note that no guarantee of accuracy is either given or implied. And, like most programs, it gets easier the more it is used!

Zoom for free

Zoom is a commercial organisation and as such charges for its services. However, they do provide a no charge version which is basically the same but with limits on the length of a meeting (call) and the number of participants. Zoom’s free version is excellent for the requirements of most churches, schools and charitable work. It provides the following: Host up to 100 participants; Unlimited one- to-one meetings; Forty (40) minutes limit on group meetings; Unlimited number of meetings; Online support; Video conferencing features; Web conferencing features; Group collaboration features and Security (Secure Socket Layer encryption; AES 256 bits encryption). To sign up for a Zoom account requires an email address. Zoom responds by sending an email with a link to be clicked to activate the new account. To log on to Zoom using a web browser, open your browser and enter the address zoom.us/ signin. Enter your email address and password, and then press the Sign In button. To log on to Zoom using the Zoom Application, launch the app. When the opening screen appears, select the Sign In option. Enter your email address and password, then press the Sign In button.

Web based: The Zoom client allows joining a meeting or webinar without downloading any plugins or software. However, the web client functions best on Google Chrome® or the very latest version of Windows Edge®.

Software based: The Zoom desktop client can be downloaded from https://zoom.us/support/ download. Once downloaded, run the installer application.

For smartphones, tablets, et al, download the Zoom Cloud Meetings app from an appropriate app store.
