Inhibiting the build-up of limescale If left unchecked, limescale can lead to problems such as higher energy bills as well as premature repairs, breakdowns and replacement of secondary hot water system components and appliances. Limescale control device, KalGUARD from Sentinel Commercial, permanently ‘conditions’ water by dosing it with a very low level of stable zinc. This is achieved via a controlled electrolytic process, which uses a powered zinc anode and a copper cathode, forcing naturally-occurring calcium carbonate crystals to form as soft, non-deposit-forming aragonite rather than hard, deposit-forming calcite (limescale). Electrolytic technology is recommended by UK Building Services Compliance Guide to Part L.

Natural look for school façade When David Turnock Architects was commissioned to design the new Silsoe Church of England VC Lower School with a fabric first approach and emphasis on energy efficiencies, VIVIX by Formica Group panels were specified for the facade. The design brief required a blend of natural woodgrains. 8mm thick VIVIX panels in Golden Morning Oak, Mission Oak and Barn Oak were selected for the facade; meeting the requirement for a wooden cladding aesthetic, but providing superior performance properties than its natural counterpart. All VIVIX panels for the project were manufactured in the UK, reducing on material transportation and the overall project carbon footprint.

Energy saving radiators for London primary school Over 150 high efficiency and safe-to-touch Autron LST radiators have been installed at the new Garfield Primary School in Enfield. The natural convector LST radiators feature throughout the school, while vertical LST radiators – standing over 2m tall – were installed in the children’s toilets. Due to its low water content copper and aluminium fin emitter, an Autron natural convector radiator will typically start to deliver effective room heating within two minutes. This responsiveness means that heating only needs to come on when required. The reduced need to ‘buffer’ the heating contributes to a more comfortable learning and teaching environment and can deliver fuel cost savings.

Height adjustable toilet aids wheelchair transfer Toilets installed in bathrooms used by those with disabilities should be at the same height as a wheelchair to limit the risk of falls. Pressalit Care’s height adjustable Select toilet bracket provides the flexibility to position the toilet to suit the position of the wheelchair user and ease transfer in a safe and controlled way. With the use of a hand-held control, the toilet pan can be adjusted to slightly below the level of the wheelchair, thus helping transfer across. To move back, simply raise the toilet back to a height slightly higher than the wheelchair. The toilet bracket can be used alongside the Select height adjustable basin bracket, which features a horizontal track for additional flexibility.
