Playful library theme to inspire reading at Bolton school

A

N ORIGINAL library design has been created for the newly-built Olive Tree Primary, Bolton’s first free school. The brief was for an inviting, modern

space to encourage reading and one that would become the centrepiece of the school. It also needed to be a flexible space, one that would not only be used as a quiet space for individual reading, but one that could also be used for group study. The design by fit-out company

Whitespace incorporated a vibrant tiered seating area with cosy recesses showcasing the school colours and offering a fun area where pupils can relax and read. With imaginative use of furniture design, book storage capacity was increased by incorporating additional shelving into the seating, complementing the fixed wall bookcases to the perimeter of the room. The use of artificial grass to this area

also delivers a playful feeling of the outdoors. Continuing with this theme, a bespoke ‘tree’ reading space, with the ‘trunk’ providing extra seating was introduced to the space. Modular stools and tables in a flexible layout give the finishing touch. The result is a bright, energetic and

visually appealing area. The library now provides a space that brings students together to either read, study and/or socialise in a comfortable environment.

children’s washing and breakout areas. Benchmark FF&E Solutions was

appointed to create the scallop-shaped wash and utility stations which were moulded around yellow columns housing sunpipes. Bright red Rosso high pressure laminate in a high gloss HR-LAQ finish from Abet Laminati was used to clad the sides of the stations while compact

Suitable for heavy use environments where children are playing, compact grade high pressure laminates are also used for lockers, table tops, vanity units and cubicles. The solid core construction in 6mm, 10mm or 12mm thickness makes it appropriate for areas prone to high moisture and humidity, such as leisure centres, swimming pools and changing rooms, because there is no risk of peeling, cracking or delamination.
