More pupil places for Devon schools T

HREE expansion projects totalling £3.5m are being carried out at schools in Devon by Morgan Sindall. The first project will see the firm

Temporary buildings give way to permanent block at SEN school

NEW £1.3m, seven classroom block has been added to the teaching and learning facilties at St John’s

Special School and College in Bedford. The SEN school, currently part of

Bedford’s temporary teaching facilities, has been transformed by Lungfish Architects (part of Scape group) with a design more conducive to SEN teaching. The space has been reimagined with a multiuse room and classrooms where 6-12 pupils can be catered for per room. “The temporary, former units have now

been demolished and in its place is a modern classroom block which has the needs of the pupils at its core,” explains Kieran Roberts, architectural technician at Lungfish. “The pupils’ special educational needs have been at the forefront of the design process, with wide corridors being

incorporated throughout and each classroom having its own disabled toilets, quiet room and additional storage areas to keep the learning spaces clear. “This new provision is a lot larger than

the original buildings, providing staff and pupils with an additional 250 sqm. This has enabled scope for more open spaces with natural light also being of paramount importance to create an inspirational learning environment. “A multi-use room has also been

incorporated into the designs, creating an informal area for group activities, making best use of the space and enabling the children to safely play and learn.”

Steep gradient Construction work has been carried out by Kier, procured through the Scape National Minor Works framework. As a site, it was relatively difficult to negotiate as it had a steep gradient. This has now been levelled out to create a new wheelchair accessible area, opening the space up to an increased number of pupils. The work has been completed as part

of Bedford Borough Council’s programme of works in replacing temporary buildings across the county.

accommodate increasing numbers of primary age pupils in the Exmouth area. Morgan Sindall has also been appointed

The building will include a dance studio, fitness suite, changing and shower facilities and a new gym, as well as three specialist classrooms, office space and an ICT suite.

The project is being delivered in partnership with TFQ Architects. In addition, the firm is undertaking the
