In the mood for merchandise F
How are you feeling at the minute? That’s a question that many of us find ourselves asking our family, friends, colleagues, and even ourselves. The latest lockdown has none of the summer holiday vibe of the last one, leaving many of us a bit cheesed off. Promotional products commentator, Stuart Derrick, reports.
or companies who are managing a remote workforce, it’s even more of an issue. How do you stay on top of people’s wellbeing when it’s impossible to just sidle over, have a chat, and get an inkling for how they are?
One company has come up with an interesting tool to help. Hull-based Moodbeam has created wearables that can be used for employees to register their mood. Using a wrist band, wearers can register whether they are feeling okay by pressing a yellow button, or not okay with a blue button. It’s incredibly simple, but provides data that can indicate the collective mood in an organisation, as well as of individuals.
Powerful and motivating Simple ideas can be powerful and motivating. Take Snap Products’ branded Mood Motivation Cards. These packs of cards come in sets of 10 or 20 and each one contains a motivational message, perfect for onboarding, work-from-home packs, thank you gifts and mental health initiatives.
They are letterbox friendly so great for sending to colleagues’ homes and feature a colourful mix of cards or can be based on one of the 23 Mood colours that are closest to your corporate branding. Logos or marketing messages can be added to the front or reverse of the box and to the front of each card. The entire product, including the box is manufactured in- house from FSC certified card and printed in vibrant full colour.
in the UK. You can get paper ones, but if you really want to live the green dream, then reusable is the way to go. Preseli’s reusable retractable metal straw set includes a three-section retractable stainless steel straw, a retractable cleaning brush to keep your pipework clean, and a strong aluminium case with a split ring attachment to make sure you always have it to hand.
New products
Also new this month is Mibuk, a British made notebook from Boosters in four size options with customisable page options. The books have a full-colour wraparound cover using a customer’s chosen image or artwork. Text page options include plain pages, pages with lines, grids, planners, perpetual calendars, or bespoke designs.
entries, none more so than the Sustainable Product of the Year from Austrian company blvck. Its catchily named Pferdeapfel Bio Naturdünger is natural horse dung fertiliser. The ‘horse apples’ consist of dried, fragrant horse manure, which contains the optimal combination of nutrients for plants and vegetables and is therefore the perfect companion for your garden or houseplants.
I’m just wondering what message it sends to the recipient – “You’re sh…uperb!” (Best Sean Connery accent required!). Polish confectioner, Slodkie Upominki picked up an award for the high-quality products and biodegradable packaging in its Fit&Healthy range. Slodkie has also just released its mouthwatering range of Easter treats. From the oh-so-healthy pots of banana or apple chips, through to the full chocoholic delight of 3D chocolate puzzles, mini eggs, and Easter truffles. Not to be opened before April 4, remember!

Of course, the lockdown is stopping activity across Europe. The industry’s PSI show in Germany was one of many that has been postponed recently. However, it did manage to hold a virtual ceremony for its Sustainability Awards. As always in the wacky world of merchandise, there were some intriguing
Haters gonna hate Finally, the recent Super Bowl campaign from Oatly tickled me. Aware that haters gonna hate, especially when it’s on a trendy non-dairy milk brand, the company got in first with a cheeky merch-led campaign.

Its Super Bowl ad featured CEO Toni Petersson’s tuneless singing of a little ditty called ‘Wow! No cow!’ which had been so loathed in its native Sweden when aired in 2014 that the company had to take it down.
This time, it got its excuses in first with a call to action on Instagram that invited people to collect a free T shirt that told the world ‘I totally hated that Oatly commercial’. The full run of 500 T shirts was gone in minutes.
