IAAPA Update
All change
During the IAAPA Expo in Orlando this November, the 2022 IAAPA Chairman of the Board of Directors will pass the proverbial admission ticket to his successor. Ken Whiting, President of Whiting’s Foods Concessions, will welcome Jim Pattison Jr, President of Ripley Entertainment, as the 2023 Chairman. Park World’s Susan Storey
Susan Storey: What has been the best part of being the IAAPA Chairman this year? Ken Whiting: I’ve been able to connect with our IAAPA teams and members in each region around the world. I learned so much more about our association and the global attractions industry from everyone and I am so inspired by how everyone persevered over the last couple of years. I was also able to see firsthand – and acknowledge – the contributions of
IAAPA’s volunteers as I took part in committee calls and attended member events. Industry professionals from all member constituencies share their time and talent with each other and the association each and every day. We can never say thank you enough. Oh, and this year, as Chair, I had a personal quest to find the world’s best
soft serve. I believe I found it – in Copenhagen! SS:
KW: It felt good. No matter where I traveled there was commitment and optimism about the future of our industry. While every region had – and still has – unique challenges to work through, including important topics such as safety compliance and even ongoing COVID-related issues, there has been a consistent and firm belief the experience economy will prevail and continue to grow. We’ve all learnt how to be flexible and adjust operations within
18
new health and safety guidelines and have taken those learnings forward. We set a global example not just for our guests and employees, but also for other industries demonstrating how to successfully pivot while remaining operational.
SS: KW: The first thing that comes to mind is that after nearly two years without in-person member events, we moved forward with the tremendous task of hosting three global events, a summit in each region, and several local networking and educational events around the world. The virtual APAC Expo allowed us to still bring together members in that region so they could engage with each other, while the IAAPA Expo Europe was really successful as attendees shared business and focused on the future. We were excited to welcome all member types – operating companies, manufacturers and suppliers. Going into 2022, we heard from members about their desire and pent-up
demand to come together in person, see the innovations from supplier and manufacturer members, and to learn from others abo
