Tivoli Gardens Opens Hikari on Its 183rd Anniversary In her opening speech, Tivoli CEO Susanne
n 15th August, Tivoli Gardens in the heart of Copenhagen officially opened Hikari, the amusement park’s new
Japanese-inspired area. The opening brings together architecture, art, lighting, food, shops and two new attractions in a vibrant setting inspired by the streets and culture of Japan. Tivoli Gardens is one of the world’s oldest
amusement parks and a landmark in the centre of Copenhagen, located next to Copenhagen City Hall. Founded in 1843, Tivoli combines rides and attractions with gardens, restaurants, concerts, cultural experiences and architecture, and has been an integral part of Copenhagen’s cultural life for more than 180 years. Hikari is the largest themed area in Tivoli’s
history and has been three years in development, followed by two years of extensive redevelopment. At its heart is The Demon rollercoaster, which twists and turns above the new streetscape. Visitors can explore five new places to eat, Japanese-inspired art and architecture, neon signs and shops, as well as two brand-new attractions.
The official opening was celebrated in sunshine with a performance by the Seido Taiko drumming group, music, flags, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tastings from Hikari’s five new restaurants and food outlets.
Mørch Koch described the thinking behind Hikari: “With Hikari, we wanted to create something that was entirely our own. Tivoli’s designers and developers have designed the area from scratch. Over the years, we have travelled to Japan to experience the culture for ourselves,
gather impressions and draw inspiration. We have selected doors, windows, vintage items and, among other things, had 60 tonnes of Japanese roof tiles shipped to Copenhagen. Every detail has been carefully selected. From the art and architecture to the planting, lighting, scenography and gastronomy. Everything has been brought together by Tivoli’s own experts and employees, as well as skilled advisers, and made a reality by our talented craftsmen. Not to build a Japan in Tivoli. But to let ourselves be inspired by the world and interpret it in our own way. That is how Tivoli has developed for more than 180 years. We have always drawn inspiration from around the world and made it part of Tivoli’s own story.” Hikari is the latest chapter in Tivoli’s long
tradition of drawing inspiration from around the world and transforming it through the distinctive Tivoli approach. The new area is designed not as a replica of Japan, but as Tivoli’s own interpretation of Japanese influences, brought together through its architecture, art, food, lighting, attractions and attention to detail. The opening of Hikari forms part of Tivoli’s
183rd anniversary celebrations on 15 August, a date that is celebrated every year at the historic amusement park.
