SimEx-Iwerks Agila: The Experience

Flight of Passage

Flight of Passage is the much- anticipated key attraction at Disney Animal Kingdom’s new land Pandora – The World of Avatar, which opened in May last year. A 3D expedition takes

travellers on a sweeping, simulated flight over Pandora’s colourful landscape. Each guest straddles a single-seat simulator (like a motorcycle) that delivers a realistic sensation of riding a living creature. They experience the swift and graceful movements of flight and even feel the ‘banshee’ breathing beneath them. “In Flight of Passage, the sensation of flying is really visceral, really believable,” says Joe Rohde, Walt Disney Imagineering portfolio creative executive. “Not only do you have the more obvious aspects of flying – the swooping and curving – but we’ve put in crosswind, air density and banking.”

The visuals transport riders on a 4-minute flight through the sci-fi world of Pandora, featuring bioluminescence, floating mountains, and encounters with splashing whale-like creatures, blowing wind and roaring banshees. The experience is set to a complex musical score recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra (pictured).

demonstrated a smaller 4D flying theatre featuring a two-seat configuration – this one is fully scalable and custom designed for installing in existing spaces. Adaptability is key to this design, with flying seat systems available in two-seat and five-seat models—allowing for more varied design solutions. What’s more, several screen options are available, including wrap-around, concaved curve and dome, that integrate with 2D or 3D projection, enhanced audio systems, theatrical lighting and numerous special effects. Italian amusement ride manufacturer Moviemex3D is bringing a redesigned adaptable flying theatre to the market, designed specifically for locations with restricted dimensions. It has been scaled back using 3DOF mini platforms that can be attached to the ceiling, and a 360° half DOM screen that offers an immersive visual experience whilst fitting the available space. So far Moviemex3D has created products

Understanding your audience Different markets have different requirements, and understanding and accommodating them is key to a successful attraction. Creative director Peter Cliff told Park World about Holovis’ next generation flying theatre solution, which has its first installation in a new park the company is co-developing with its partners in China. “Due to the way in which this new design positions

the rider in relation to the projection screen, the level of immersion is so intense that 3D simply isn’t needed. This means guests can enjoy the experience without any cumbersome head mounted displays or glasses. This is
