ince the inadequacies of unsafe RAAC buildings hit the headlines in August this year, 214 affected schools have been listed on the UK government website. The guidelines state that schools must vacate the condemned areas ‘unless suitable mitigations are in place’. In response, at Smart-Space we are doing what we do best – and that’s providing instant solutions to minimise disruption and lost teaching days. We have been providing a rapid response, working with schools and contractors, to erect temporary structures that allow sports and learning to continue. As schools work with multiple stakeholders on the complexities of planning, scoping, funding and building new premises, a temporary building is an excellent way to continue with ‘business as usual’. A temporary building provides vital space for classrooms, sports halls or school halls for as long as it is needed. It can even be relocated and used in different parts of the school. A recent project (pictured during the build) was completed within 21 days from the initial call from the school’s building contractors. We covered an existing school tennis court with a temporary canopy that protects students from the inclement British weather and allows sports to continue whilst a more permanent solution is being planned.

Cityheart Living’s accommodation in Cityheart’s Blackfriars Residence is brand new and offers high specification and secure student accommodation to the University of Gloucestershire.
Midas Group, a multimillion-pound construction group with seven offices around the southwest and Wales, had been appointed by the developers Cityheart Living as main contractors but went into administration in 2022. Vitruvius who are a team of project and construction management consultants swiftly proposed a Construction Management approach to restart the project and were appointed to take over the project.
