Teacher pay - know your worth!


now is an excellent time to take a closer look at agency pay rates. With agency rates often difficult to understand


and decipher, are you getting a fair deal? With some knowledge and intel on things to be aware of when negotiating pay with agencies, you could find yourself with more money in your bank account come pay day!


Day to day supply - expectations & pay Initially it’s important to establish the distinctions between the different types of work agencies can provide you, what the expectations are for each, and the pay rates associated with them. If you just want ad hoc work and don’t want

n our second feature examining the current state of the jobs market in the education


sector, we hear from Ollie Parsons, Education Recruitment Specialist at Teacher Booker, who looks at supply teacher pay rates and gives some useful pointers on working out your worth to agencies.


Do you know the true value of your experience? With supply teachers currently in high demand,


subject specific lessons (especially in primary schools) and with very little work, if any at all, to take home with you, it comes as no surprise that schools will not be willing to pay supply teachers in line with their experience for day-to-day supply, they simply don’t have the budget. As a result, most schools will have an agreed supply rate negotiated with the agencies that they use, which can range from £160 - £210 a day depending on the school and its location - this is the rate that the agency is charging the school. Every agency will have a standard supply rate


that they offer teachers which varies depending on your location and whether they are paying you via umbrella or PAYE (we’ll come to this later). If you just want ad hoc work then the best way to

secure higher rates will be to shop around and see what each agency is offering but please remember to get a commitment in writing of the daily rate that they will pay you and make sure it clearly states if it’s umbrella or PAYE, so you can refer back to it any time. Many rates will come down to the relationships you can establish with the agency consultants, but you can use the charge rates above to gauge what sort of offer they are making you.


Long term supply, being paid to scale & AWR You might, for instance, take on a maternity cover role. In this situation a school would expect you to take on all the duties of the absent teacher, including marking, planning, prep, meetings, parents’ evenings and any other relevant responsibilities. This being the case you can easily justify being


paid to scale in line with your experience. If only it were that simple! Most agencies will be very coy when it comes to discussing rates with teachers and can often be hard to pin down to a specific figure. When pushed they will often quote figures which have little to do with a teacher’s pay and experience, in the hope that you will accept a manageable rate that will allow them to maintain their margins when negotiating with their client schools. Typical negotiation strategy will see them


quote you a rate below your market value to see if you are receptive. They will then use this leeway when negotiating a charge rate with the school in order to maximise their margin.
