Making maths count at Chesterton Primary
two thirds of Chesterton Primary’s intake are pupil premium students. In our popular View from the classroom slot this month we’re delighted to speak to Head Teacher Stella Formosa, who explains how the school team has pulled together to implement significant changes.
Tell us about your school Chesterton Primary School caters for 2-11 year olds. It is situated in the heart of Chesterton close to Newcastle-under-Lyme and is an ex-mining village. The school is one of four schools currently in the Collective Vision Trust. The school has 171 children on roll with 65 percent from disadvantaged backgrounds, 10.6 percent EAL and 16 percent SEN children. Our intent is to inspire each child to know and

ithin two years, Chesterton Primary based in Newcastle-Under-Lyme,
Staffordshire, has gone from being deemed ‘inadequate’ in its Ofsted inspection, to being classed as a ‘good’ school with outstanding attitudes and behaviour. This transformation is even more remarkable considering these dramatic improvements were made during the pandemic and that
experience the world beyond their doorstep and also be equipped with the basic and necessary skills to cope with day-to-day life. We want the children to be proud of who they are, where they come from and how they fit into society. We want parents to embark on the journey alongside their children and support positive behaviour, learning at home and good attendance. We plan our children’s learning so that is relevant and clear so that they ‘know more’ and

‘remember more.’ The children are provided with crucial knowledge so that they have a firm foundation to build on. We are determined to improve learning outcomes for all children so that they are ambitious in their outlook and thrive in the community.
