A college which provides free training courses for youngsters interested in military careers has decamped to a new venue.

TheMilitary Preparation College at South Shields – one of 27 across the UK - has moved from its base at the town’s army reserve centre to state-of-the- art facilities within South Tyneside College.

And staff and learners alike say the move has opened up a breadth of new opportunities for them.

The college, which is one of four in the North East, offers free courses to help 16 to 19-year-olds, of all abilities and from all backgrounds, into a wide range of careers, both within the military and in civilian life.

These include academic, functional and health and fitness courses along with training in physical fitness, public speaking and communication. And they are unique in that all their instructors are ex-British Armed Force s personnel, who use their military backgrounds to help learners set and reach the targets that will progress them to their chosen careers.

Social enterprise and skills training provider Ahead Partnership has brought together young people with senior business leaders and private sector partners from across the region to celebrate their most successful year of skills activity to date.

Almost 100 representatives from across a range of business sectors descended on the iconic Leeds Art Gallery to champion the organisation’s 2018/2019 achievements and hear more about the exciting projects in the pipeline for the year ahead, which includes further geographic expansion across the UK.

Ahead Partnership highlighted a phenomenal year, working with a total of 56,681 students and mobilising over 3,300 business volunteers through 439 separate careers and skills events. The year got off to flying start for the ng the receipt of funding to support 27,000 students Doncaster through the Government’s “Opportunity

across Bradford and organisation followi

Area” programme, allowing Ahead Partnership to accelerate their work in these regions. Ahead Partnership has also made important inroads into delivering initiatives to students with SEND (Special Education Needs and Disability), a programme they’re looking to accelerate in the 2019/20 academic year.

Ahead Partnership’s work heavily relies on the support of businesses who wish to work collaboratively with education providers to deliver highly beneficial skills an d career activities for young people and in 2018/2019 alone, the organisation received the support of over 700 different businesses from a vast range of sectors .

Level Action Plan today which confirms the details of the remaining 15 T Levels – to be introduced from 2022 and 2023 – as well as the selection criteria for providers wishing to deliver T Levels in 2022.

T Levels will be two-year courses equivalent to three A levels. They will combine classroom theory and practical learning and will be available to 16- 19 years olds who have completed their GCSEs. A unique part of a T Level is the completion of a high-quality industry placement of at least 31 5 hours (or around 45 days) or so that students can build the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in a workplace environment.
