his month, in our ever popular View from the classroom feature, we speak to Tom
Feighan, PE Lead at St. Mary’s RC Primary in Rochdale, who explains how an online resource is helping the school’s pupils to engage and succeed in maths whilst also achieving their daily target of physical activity.
Tell us about your school St. Mary’s RC Primary School in Middleton, Rochdale, has approximately 450 students from reception through to Year 6 (ages 3 to 11) and is part of the Rochdale Cluster membership with children’s charity the Youth Sport Trust, which allows the schools to access support and insight. The school is situated in a challenging area with high levels of deprivation. However, its mission is to help children recognise, value and celebrate their individual skills and talents and to help them to develop their full potential.
You are using an online resource called Maths of the Day to help raise attainment and attitudes towards maths through active lesson plans, can you tell us about this? St. Mary’s Headteacher Ben Lavin introduced the online resource Maths of the Day in January of

the 2017/18 academic year. This was in response to an on-going commitment for Manchester schools to achieve more active lessons, with just 40% of children in Greater Manchester doing the recommended 60 minutes of daily activity.
Maths of the Day provided teachers with the
opportunity to meet the target of daily activity as well as making learning fun and engaging for the children. The school was finding that helping to influence the additional 30 active minutes outside
