BESA CORNER
This month, in our ongoing feature highlighting the work of members of the UK education suppliers’ trade body BESA, we hear from DOODLEMATHS, who share a case study from The Isle of Wight; and education recruitment platform EDNEX.
Improving outcomes in maths with DoodleMaths
Lanesend Primary School is a popular, well regarded and outward- looking academy school that serves the community of Cowes on the Isle of Wight. As part of a holistic strategy to improve pupil outcomes in mathematics, they began using DoodleMaths in early 2017. The adaptive nature of DoodleMaths was recognised as having the
potential to nurture each pupil’s individual learning needs with appropriate targeted support. It is used as a homework solution across the school. Children approach it like the reading scheme, finding time to do a few minutes every day through an easy-to-access app on tablets or phones. Graham Andre, Leader of Learning Years 3 & 4, explains: “Our
school ethos is, ‘learning should be captivating, exciting and enjoyable’ and the strategy we’ve implemented is absolutely underpinned by this. DoodleMaths was one part of a holistic, all- encompassing plan; we embedded stimulating provision across the school to ensure each pupil’s needs are well catered for. We have seen big improvements in maths attainment across the board over the last 18 months, and DoodleMaths has played a part in this. School leaders have been praised for driving positive change across the school and into the wider family.” Teachers can use the app in a variety of ways during the school day:
as a content tool for supporting maths lessons, as a powerful intervention tool, for early finishers, golden time, wet play or breakfast and after-school club. The data generated can also be used to identify individual students’ strengths and weaknesses. “At home, parents are in touch with their child’s progress
through the ‘Parent Connect’ app. They are delighted with the appropriately-levelled content and their children’s maths positivity!” continues Graham. “DoodleMaths is recognised by parents and staff as a safe
environment in which children can answer targeted maths questions without judgement. Children are highly engaged in earning stars to spend on their pet accessories as well as positively endorsing their classmates' efforts.” Over the last 18 months, children from Lanesend have earned over 500,000 stars (that’s one star per correct answer) outside of their usual everyday maths provision. There’s no doubt that implementing a personalised, adaptive
system like DoodleMaths requires a small change in mindset from teachers. Using technology that generates individual work programs with little or no input from the teacher can, for some, feel like a loss of control. But overcoming this can be rewarding. As Graham sums up, “In short, DoodleMaths is the perfect app for schools to help boost attainment, whilst promoting a real love of maths and positively engaging children in really purposeful learning. What’s not to love?”

Smart technology is helping to tackle the education
recruitment crisis With a greater focus on technology and innovation in schools than ever, Ednex is providing a platform that will ultimately impact children’s education by enabling schools to save money in one of the most costly and contentious areas – recruitment. Set up by people passionate about education and innovation, Ednex
is supporting schools to reduce or even eliminate recruitment spend via agencies.
The small annual fee keeps the school in control of budget The annual subscription costs less than just one placement fee via traditional recruitment methods, and you can use the platform to advertise as many roles as you wish, meaning the saving to the school increases on every single hire. No placement fees, no temp to perm fees and no margin on direct supply means no surprise costs to the school either. Ednex can also manage supply contracts and payment for less than 4% transaction fee. The ability to post unlimited vacancies on the platform 365 days per year means the system is always working for you.
Ednex is saving schools money and time The smart technology connects schools directly with education professionals cutting out the time and cost associated with supply and recruitment agencies. Meaning school staff can allocate more time to supporting new arrivals and supply cover. The platform is designed to be simple to use whether that’s on PC, laptop, tablet or phone to save schools extra time as well as money.
Greater control over how your school is represented Ednex partner schools create their own bespoke profile through which they can manage and promote as many vacancies as they wish, meaning the school maintains control of how they are represented in front of potential candidates. All supply, fixed term and permanent vacancies are managed in one space to ensure consistency of message and representation. Your Ednex account manager will also support you in creating local pools of candidates on the platform suited to the needs of your school.
Only qualified and relevant candidates are notified of vacancies The Ednex platform matches vacancies with relevant, vetted and background checked candidates meaning only candidates who match your specific job criteria will be able to apply. All candidates are cleared by our specialist compliance team before they are able to respond to vacancies and communicate directly with a school.
Completely free for teachers, teaching assistants and education professionals Ednex provides a completely free careers platform for teachers, teaching assistants and education professionals. A place to manage their digital CV, career history and CPD privately until they are looking for their next role.
