Continent 8 continues expansion plans

C

ontinent 8 Technologies has completed the latest stage of its multi-million dollar global network expansion. The

managed hosting, cloud and network provider said its services are now spread across Europe, Asia and the Americas, with the new development linking the Asia- Pacific region back to Europe and directly to its US network, via new, dedicated points of presence in Los Angeles, California, and Hong Kong. The expansion takes Continent 8’s global locations count to total to 27, with the firm able to send data around the world in under 300

milliseconds. Michael Tobin, co-founder and chief executive of Continent 8, said: “We are extremely proud to have made this further investment to take our network truly global, and in particular to be able to complete the project on time, on budget and to the exacting standards our customers have come to expect. We are building an ecosystem of directly connected unique locations, customers and

services. Many providers claim to be ‘global’, yet few can demonstrate such a commitment and allow their customers access to leverage their investment.”

ZEAL to launch in Norway, Netherlands Z

EAL Network is to go live in Norway and the Netherlands through its Lottovate Limited and Lottovate Nederland

subsidiaries, respectively. Lottovate will launch in Norway in partnership with the UNICEF charity and will operate under a charity lottery licence, granted by the country’s regulatory body. The licence will run for nine years, with Lottovate to act as a full service provider for UNICEF Norway and offer a high frequency win game, which is played online and designed to be mobile-first. A significant portion of the proceeds of the lottery will go to good causes. Meanwhile, ZEAL said that Lottovate’s licence is effectively the first new lottery operator licence to be awarded by the Dutch state since 1989. The licence, which is also the full operator licence for ZEAL, will allow

Lottovate to run a nationwide charity lottery for five years. Lottovate plans to introduce a mobile-first, social lottery for Dutch consumers by the third quarter of this year. Helmut Becker, chief executive of ZEAL, said: “We are extremely pleased to be launching innovative lottery products in Norway and the Netherlands. The collaboration with UNICEF in Norway has proven to be a successful one and we are happy to offer our customers a unique online

lottery experience. In the Netherlands, the decision of the Dutch regulator to approve the Lottovate licence is a powerful validation of the quality of our offering and our long-standing expertise in the field of online lotteries. It also underlines the excellent progress we are making with Lottovate.”

European Commission endorses UK betting levy reform

T

he European Commission has endorsed a reform of the existing UK Horserace Betting Levy scheme as being in line with European Union (EU) state aid rules. Announced by the UK government earlier this year, the regulations will place a 10% levy on profit for all bookmakers that take bets in British horse racing from punters in the UK. The new setup will replace the current system, where only companies based in the UK have to pay a 10% levy on the gross profits above the first £500,000 (589,800 Euro/$641,000). In a statement on its website, the Commission

confirmed its approval for the new system, saying that it will create a “level playing field” amongst operators. “The Commission has approved the measure because it recognises that it is essential for the improvement of horse breeding and horseracing without giving rise to undue distortions of competition,” the statement said. “The measure also creates a level playing field among betting operators while at the same time supporting entry of new operators and the development of competition between betting operators, thanks to the de minimis threshold.”

The Commission added that its decision will only apply until the UK “ceases to become a member of the EU”.
