Editor’s comment

It’s hard not to think, “What if…?” What if I were taller? Had more hair? Smelled better? But in the present climate, what if we’re opening too soon? On the other hand if it is further delayed… what if we’re opening too late and jobs and businesses disappear? It’s an incredibly difficult situation and sadly the only way to really find out, is by trying something. In the UK, it’s another month (as I type this) until casinos re-open and unlike many countries, most of the casinos here are older and the buildings quite small. It’s hard to see how a lot of places will be able to socially distance safely within their walls, so it leads me to speculate if some casinos might either vanish in the short term, or even for good. The virus may have a huge and lasting impact on the UK – as it will everywhere but most specifically on our industry. Will the industry get any further government assistance? It’s unlikely, given the political hot potato gaming always seems to be. On an extremely positive note, it’s been great to see the Vegas re-openings met with such vigour by the casino teams, and such enthusiasm by their guests. Fingers crossed that everyone, everywhere stays healthy and well and that we see no second wave. Be vigilant… Now wash your hands.
