Fiona Hickey, Director at BettingJobs. com, shares some of the key trends from the iGaming recruiter’s latest Salary Survey.
he global online gambling industry continues to grow at a rapid pace with tremendous opportunities on the table in new and existing markets
around the world. In the past six months alone, we have seen sports betting legalised in the USA following the repeal of PASPA while progress continues to be made in Africa and Asia. Closer to home, we will start the new year with Sweden enacting online gambling regulation to create a legal and licensed market for the very first time.
These factors and more are leading to a buoyant industry that will undoubtedly keep riding its impressive wave of growth for many years to come. That said, the sector still faces challenges. From compliance to increased competition and rising costs, operators and suppliers are fighting fires on many fronts. One of the biggest challenges they face is recruitment; in order to succeed in a highly competitive global industry, onboarding top talent is absolutely key. But this is becoming increasingly complex, particularly as new markets open up and demand for experienced and proven talent starts to overtake supply. What’s more, operators and suppliers entering new markets are finding it tough to benchmark salaries and employee benefits packages with no foundation to work from. To help aid the recruitment process,
BettingJobs.com has just launched the latest version of its popular Salary Survey. The survey provides data for highest, lowest and average salaries for key roles across 12 verticals, including executive, technical, commercial, marketing, analytics and compliance. Data is offered across eight geographical regions, including the UK, Malta, Gibraltar, Eastern Europe, Western and Northern Europe, the USA, Africa and Asia. This provides organisations with the
key information they need when it comes to setting salaries for roles regardless of the employee’s experience
and where they are working from. The survey also offers a snapshot of the wider online gambling industry and can be used to highlight key trends impacting the sector. In Malta the gambling industry continues to enjoy rapid growth and talent is still being drawn to the island. But this

is pushing the value of salaries and employment packages up. On the other hand, in Gibraltar we are seeing a slow- down in new positions, but salaries continue to rise across the board.
While it is still early days in the USA, the Salary Survey has flagged clear trends that are starting to emerge. The sports betting market has got off to an incredible start – the numbers in New Jersey are hugely encouraging – but recruitment is proving to be difficult. This is mainly due to the lack of local talent available combined with difficulties in securing the necessary visas and work permits to onboard candidates from overseas. What’s more, in some states we are seeing restrictions being placed on candidates that have previously worked for black and grey market operators and suppliers. Due to a serious lack of available talent, those that are eligible to work in the USA are commanding a premium, and to date salaries and packages have been incredibly high. Of course, as the market settles down, knowledge is transferred and experience gained, salaries will likely realign with what we see in other established markets. Another trend the Salary Survey has revealed is that compliance is now its own separate vertical with operators and suppliers creating dedicated teams. This, in turn, has seen compliance become one of the most in-demand talents, and salaries have risen in line with this. As more markets embrace regulation, and those that are already regulated continue to tighten the screw on operators and suppliers, this trend looks set to continue. Finally, when it comes to analytics this is now an
organisation-wide function rather than just a specific department. The rise of big data and the need to understand and act upon what it says is relevant to all aspects of an iGaming business, from finance to product via marketing and legal. As you can see, the Betting Jobs Salary Survey not only
provides unrivalled insight into industry salaries, but also the state of play in core markets around the world. The above are just some of the highlights from the survey, with plenty more unique data and analysis available when you click into it.
