MIRRORS & MIRRORED CABINETS Sycamore: 25 years in the making
Sycamore’s Natalie Paley and Angela James talk to Matt Broughton about the company’s 25th anniversary
Matt: How long have you been at Sycamore and what changes have you seen in your time? Angela: I started working at Sycamore in 2005, initially as a warehouse operative. Over the years as the business grew, I moved into the sales office, and then onto the position of marketing manager in 2010. The product range is dramatically different. In 2005 the majority of the products we sold were halogen and fluorescent, as the technology just wasn’t available at the time. We supplied these products to small kitchen outlets throughout the UK, and all our products were originally sold within the UK. Later that same year, Sycamore relocated to larger premises in Leeds following rapid growth and securing larger customers. We also began to source products from Italy and Germany. LED Lighting was introduced into our range in this year, by means of a small cabinet light, making Sycamore the first to offer LED lighting within the UK. As the business continued to be successful, we invested heavily in a testing laboratory and technical design centre. New state-of-the-art testing machinery enabled us to be the first company of our size to offer accurate and reliable test data for all our products in-house. We also upgraded our showroom to show our new and innovative lighting solutions for the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.
In 2014 new qualified personnel were brought in to oversee the technical and design department. We then had the capability to offer lighting advice for projects of any size. 2017 saw us working towards a 100% LED range, along with embracing new technologies such as smart lighting and controls.
2020 was the year we initially launched our initial collection of LED Mirrors and Bathroom Lighting. The interest in adding lighting to bathroom designs grew in popularity among our customers, so due to this high demand, we
expanded our bathroom lighting offering to include a new collection of Tunable White LED Mirrors and Cabinets.
Matt: Our focus this month is on “Multifunctional Mirrors and Mirrored Cabinets” – what are your key products that fall into this category? Natalie: All our mirrors and cabinets are tunable white LED, which can help to create a different ambience depending on the time of day or to create a particular mood. Tunable White (CCT) offers the user the ability to change the colour of their lighting from warm, to natural or to cool white to suit the individual décor or individual preference. Our mirrors can also be dimmed to provide a cosy feel for a relaxing spa-like experience within the home. Each mirror features modern touch control buttons on the front of the mirror for ease of switching and dimming. Some models feature Bluetooth speakers and shaver sockets.
We are particularly proud of our Balmoral LED Cabinets, these stunning products come Complete with Bluetooth Speaker, a USB charging port and a built-in shaver socket. Internally, the Balmoral has a stylish matt black design, with a mirrored panel on the inside of the door and at the rear of the cabinet, along with two adjustable height glass shelves for storing a huge amount of bathroom accessories. Externally, the cabinet has mirrored panels to both sides, as well as both under and over cabinet illumination for a sleek look. The diffused illuminated border to the front of the cabinet provides a uniform light output with no dark spots. The Tunable function enables users to choose the most suitable colour temperature for their décor or individual preference, warm white, natural white or cool white. It can also be dimmed to create the desired ambience.

The mirror stays fog free due to the built-in demister pad, which switches off automatically after 30 minutes. The mirror also has an IP44 rating making it suitable for use in a bathroom environment.
